Is this basically a colder part of the country or more tropical?

It would be about 30Cdegrees there today. Temperate to very hot summers, cool winters. The main problem with that coast is easterly winds - cold off the sea. Then there are the southerlies...

Ashburton is nearest town of any size http://www.ashburtontoday.co.nz/

For some reason, Ashburton is growing rapidly, and they are struggling to get sufficient people to fill all the jobs there. If you feel like moving to NZ SJ, you could get cheap housing and plenty of work there. It must be to do with the large scale conversions to dairy farming on the Canterbury plains, with a need for all sorts of fabricators for dairy plant etc. Plus that area is booming in seed production. It is one of the best seed producing areas in the world, and local firms have serious overseas supply contracts - with Dutch companies etc. There is one kind of seed that they have developed that is a world leader in terms of production, but I can't recall what it is - I think it is onions.

623900 2007-12-24 03:35:00 SJ - here are some pretty pix of the area: http://www.ashburtontourism.co.nz/

Southbridge used to have a great car and motorbike race meeting. It was an annual event, and it started after church on a Sunday. The races took place along the main street and around the back streets of Southbridge. Best place to view was on the lawn in front of the local pub - hot pies and Speights Old Dark Ale kept the spectators going.

I notice it seems to have stopped - I suppose it is another casualty of our OSH laws and legal liability for events, that seem to have sucked the life out of our communities. Schools used to give parents the keys to their swimming pools so the families could use them over the long holidays. Not now - most schools have either stopped that, or closed their pools entirely because of OSH problems. Watch the drowning rate go up... OSH stops kids getting tummy upsets etc from bugs in the water, but will later on lead to them drowning because they are poor swimmers. What a mad world we live in.

623901 2007-12-24 03:43:00 Thanks a lot guys . . that's a really nice looking area .

I (if I could migrate) would not be taking any jobs away from the local residents . . as I am retired on a nice government pension and disability check .

I have had paper mail from Belize asking me to move there . I guess they want Americans . . . don't know why unless it's for target practice .

Let me get this Arizona move under my belt and then we'll see . Keep a beer in the fridge and some shrimp for the bar-b .

Until that time . . I'll surf around and ask a lot more questions . NZ looks good .
