624934 2007-12-27 07:48:00 We have an option to buy an older ('92) corolla 4wd sedan as a family runabout.

Is the 4wd a useful addition or does it just screw up the fuel economy and make for extra parts to go wrong?

624935 2007-12-27 09:49:00 The idea is to give superior grip at high speed and/or slippery conditions, will not help at low speed since you have no low ratio gearing/diff or transmission locking /mud or snow grip tyres (now disapproved of by LTNZ, for general road use); will also use more fuel (extra weight, transmission friction/drag) and more bits to go wrong as you already mentioned. :2cents: feersumendjinn (64)

That is probably quite similar to the 1st RAV 4s, as they used to be built on a corrolla base. 92 is quite an old vehicle these days, so unless you are being given it, you should go for a 2WD which is more fuel efficient.

624937 2007-12-27 17:24:00 Isn't that Toyota an AWD as opposed to 4WD?

There's a big difference.

624938 2007-12-27 20:47:00 We have a Carib 4WD wagon (basically a Corolla engine) and a Corolla 2WD - same year and similar power plant, but half the mileage (the former is 90k and the latter is 40k).

We can get to Hokitika and back from ChCh on one tank full in the Corolla, but have to fill up before returning from Hoki in the Carib. The difference in fuel consumption with the same driver is startling.

The Carib 4WD has given us heaps of trouble with the gearbox - the change from 1st to 2nd is awful. We had the synchromesh (sp?) replaced under warranty, but it made no discernible difference. The point of this story is that to do any work on the Carib gearbox is a major operation compared with the Corolla because of the 4WD. My son has an earlier model Carib, and to redo the clutch the garage had to take the whole engine out.

Personally I would give the 1992 4WD a swerve...

624939 2007-12-28 00:52:00 depends on what you use it for. 2 wheel drive does just about everything. however when its wet AWD can be great. doing hill starts on gressy tarseal is not fun in a front wheel drive especially if you have some HP under the bonnet. tweak'e (69)

Wish I had the disposable income of youse guys .

My wheels are 8, 10 and 22 years old and I'd pit them against anything with a "use-by-dated" .

I don't see any great reasons to buy new . . the mileage is as good if not better then current vehicles, I know every nut and bolt in them all and they do what I need them to do with safety and modesty . . . yeah . . . MODESTY .

There ya go . . . Americans aren't conspicuous consumers . . . . not me anyway .

624942 2007-12-28 20:05:00 Thanks for that - pretty much as I imagined. And since the asking price was around $2k I think we can do better with something else. Hokonui (8280)
624943 2007-12-28 20:59:00 . . . and another thought . . . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . . the payments you are NOT making and the higher insurance you don't get hit with and the worry about that first parking lot ding and the first spilled (pick your own liquid here) on the upholstery and worries about theft and vandalism all fade away on a previously owned vehicle .

Let the guys with the big paying jobs like Metla, Jan and Cicero buy the new cars . We will laugh all the way to the bank .
