781915 2009-06-13 02:14:00 Hi Team

My main computer has been getting a bit flaky on boot recently, hanging and losing the mouse etc so yesterday I ran checkdisk and did a defrag and it booted fine and was much faster in its responses.

This morning however, it refused to boot at all so I ran the W2k boot disks, followed the instructions and used the install CD as directed and it all came up fine, apart from my internet connection.

I can ping sites by IP address or name but can't open them in Firefox (they time out). I've checked everything I know (or can remember) but have run out of options.

Any ideas as to where I look next? The connection through my network card switch and router are obviously OK, and the laptop I'm using now is on the same system, so where do I go from here???

Cheers

Can't see any "Direct" option in that window, can you clarify please?

I have got it working temporarily by reducing ZoneAlarm firewall security from High to Medium, but the laptop works fine on High.

I'd prefer to be able to return it to high if possible.

781920 2009-06-13 03:13:00 Should be set to no proxy, sorry thinking of IE

You may need to configure ZA to allow firefox to access the net.

781921 2009-06-13 03:13:00 Have you tried different DNS servers?

Have a look here: www.nzconnection.net at other DNS servers you could try.

That's where it is set. FF is also given internet access in ZA but set to question for server.

Not sure why I would need to try alternate DNS servers when it was all ok on the ones already set and is working ok on them with lowered ZA security. Maybe I need to know more to understand that.

Seems to me that something must have changed in W2K during the 'repair instal' for this to happen. Whatever changed blocked all internet access except pings to IP addresses or domain names.

Peculiar.

I'll see if any more ideas pop up here.

Cheers

PS I found this in a post from Dec 2008:

Run>then type in %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\ and open the hosts file there with notepad.

It should have this, if not, copy and paste it here
127.0.0.1 localhost

I had a look at the hosts file and there were several spaces between the IP address and localhost but I couldn't change it because it turned into a .txt file when saved. It is the same on my laptop anyway so can't be a problem.
