626244 2008-01-01 00:16:00 An adult's birthday on New Year's Day sounds like a good idea to me ( All those people celebrating ... and getting a new age as the year starts seems very tidy)

But I'll bet it cost you a few birthday parties with friends when you were a kid?

My sister has hers on 4th January - and always complained that because her friends were scattered for the holidays, she couldn't get them all together for a celebration.

Fortunately, such things matter less and less as time passes...

I hope you're having a great day.

Out of curiosity, does "Kahawai" mean anything in Māori?

626246 2008-01-01 03:34:00 Thank you's. It was more of a good reason for family members (rather than me), when I was a kid, to have birthday parties on the same day as new year's. But today, as you say it does not mean much. I guess many of us don't relish parties as we get older (I mean when we reach over our mid thirties or forties).

Good question about what kahawai means in maori. Don't know what kahawai means in maori, and I'm sure few people would know, despite the kahawai fish being in NZ for a long time, and known to many NZ's. Maybe some historians/researchers/MAF staff might know from this forum. It's just I use to actively spin fish for them when I was staying in Whakatane (Thorton beach for kahawai, for those that might know) and also spin fish at the Motu river. Could see massive schools of them chasing whitebait...
