626085 2007-12-31 08:44:00 We will sooner or later get these "restrictions" no doubt BUT just restrict what is where the line will be very unclear. Many activities that businesses do for research will be affected and will these individuals be allowed to be exempt ? or will every one be tarred with the same brush. Legal torrents verse illegal ? Legal downloads of music verse Pirated.?

From that article
Telecommunications Minister Stephen Conroy states that the censorship regime will be mandatory, although people will be able to opt-out of it. The problem of course then becomes if you opt-out questions will be asked as to why you want out, which in itself may lead to Government monitoring. One company I do the IT work for is always looking up Stats from different parts of the internet - its part of their jobs.

While its not Porn what they look up would be in the same category as some adult related sites.

Just how far does it go - what about online adult shops in NZ ? will they be blocked as well. Will these be censored because of the products they deal in ?
The last line in post 6 of that article says it all really
Enjoy these times, as things will be very different in the future

626086 2007-12-31 08:51:00 Fortunately, civil service zeal and efficiency will see this firmly in place with errors and omissions included, sometime in Spring, 2035. long before then Microsoft will have imploded and become a brown dwarf (from the present brown giant) due to the lawyer pile-up exceeding critical mass.
We will all be paddling about on a flooded earth and communicating by sonar. Censor that then.
Seriously, censorship will be like prohibition, or drug banning; - excellent for criminal profits.
However, in the near future, tomorrow looks like a most auspicious time to start a new year. So much so, I may even get a fresh calendar.

You didn't say anything about the heat . . . right after the perihelion it's gonna be a lot hotter and there'll be Athlon processors melting down all over the place .

That alone will cut the web traffic in 1/3rd and then there'll be swarms of gamers looking for virtual Athlon processors running on Intels (V/AXPs?) to make things happen .

DSL will then be carried over hydrophones on ELF .

How long can YOU tread water?

I'd be looking for high ground on NZ . . . even if it's not habitable now . . . there'll be the day . . . . . . . .

I'm saving my 2007 calendar in case that year comes around again .

626089 2008-01-01 03:03:00 right after the perihelion it's gonna be a lot hotter No worries, I'll go left after the perihelion.
Well, it's only "About Helion" anyway so I have to decided I've got time to ignore it and just let it go away. (Cats do this stuff all the time, so while I am getting 9 lives I'll get helion immunity.)

How long can YOU tread water? Why should I long to tread water?
And with treading water, it's not the length that is critical, it's the depth. Any thing under a fathom will do (for my toes). Any sea coming up will have to be pretty stern stuff to compete with the rain coming down, once this year long drought ends.

I will look into some elf powered hydrophones shortly (since elves are usually short this time of year).

626090 2008-01-01 04:04:00 The policy is moronic.

Why would people who do not want to look at offensive material, need an voluntary, opt-in filter, when they are not going to be looking at said offensive material anyway? And people who do want to look at the material are obviously not going to opt-in, are they?

Children? Get them off the PC and outside running around. Solves the offensive-material and the fatso-children problem simultaneous. Obesity harms far more people in Australia than the internet porn.

The policy was obviously formulated by ignorant public servants trying to appease their frightened and equally ignorant electorate, because there is no practical way to filter the internet without inconveniencing everyone. Hard-core paedophiles, terrorists etc will just switch to encryption and steganography (pressf1.co.nz) etc.

626091 2008-01-01 04:49:00 I heard a story that some big company is going to start another www but have it that you have to register before use with your intentions .

Could ba a story but would be interesting to see how that pans out . . .

This is frightening stuff. The majority of public servants are formulating it? But wait, there's more - Are we "Their" electorate?
"Inconveniencing everyone" seems to mean it is just a standard bit of legal twaddle.

However, on the bright side, I am still resolutely avoiding tripe. (Except for spouting it.)

My filter censored it

Yes, I do run a filter (the idea was to offer it as part of my IT services but I have left it on - my cleanish feed; I do have a dirty feed too) .

Internet censorship is a can of worms . We all have different ideas on what should be banned and what shouldn't be .
