782913 2009-06-17 01:35:00 Hi guy's. I have a slight problem.

My psu is currently making the worst kind of sound, its a high pitched buzz, fairly silent but it doesn't sound good nor is it doing my head any good (driving me insane).

The thing is in my trying to find the problem of the buzzing I have spotted that the fan in the psu... was not spinning. So have yanked it out and it wouldn't turn so have put another in there for now, but I think this is the root of whats happened to her (over heated).

So what I want to know, is the psu gonna blow up and/or damage some of my parts, can the sound be stopped (I'm not holding my breath on that one), whats a good one to replace it with if I have to keeping in mind I will probably be buying a psu to be running a i7 rig with dual 295's so preferably a psu that will support that one.

Thanks
Zac

The PSU is a raidmax rs-55 ATX12v2 500W

782914 2009-06-17 01:41:00 Raidmax :x

500w powering i7 with dual 25s!

You want 700-800w at the absolute minimum, 1000w preferably.

Get the Corsair HX series or the Antec Neopower's

Or Enermax ones, heard they're pretty good also

782915 2009-06-17 01:46:00 Sorry I might not have been 100% clear, Soon, not now I will be building a i7 rig with dual 295's not now. So trying to be smart, get the psu for that now in stead of getting a el chepo for this and then selling with it and buying the big boy for the i7 rig.

Also The replacement psu would perferiably be modular. Thanks

Blam, how much experience have you actually had?
I can tell you Raidmax have a high failure rate .

Corsair, Antec or Enermax only .
Don't even like Silverstone that much . . . . . . . . . .

Dual 295's would be silly, stick with one . But I would still go with 750w minimum .

782917 2009-06-17 06:19:00 Yea the PSU came with the case. Basically I think the total on time for my system is 15,000 hours so its had a fare flogging. Tuneznz (13203)
782918 2009-06-17 08:10:00 My understanding from Blams post is that he was saying the Raidmax was crap hence the X by the name although I could be wrong gary67 (56)

That was my understanding too... looked to me like he was recommending exactly the same thing as pctek.

782921 2009-06-17 22:19:00 Yea the fan on this one is made of that realy soft plastic and somewhere along the line its just jamed up and the parts have over heated.

Also now, well last night, it made a small pop and is now making a slightly louder sound. I think I am going to have to be replacing it as its not going to be getting any better.
