782477 2009-06-15 08:55:00 Seagate or WD.
Which is best and why ?

Is there a model to avoid amongst these two ?

All comments welcome please.

782478 2009-06-15 09:36:00 I've heard good stuff about the new Seagate series, fast and reliable.

Personally I reckon its better than WD

782479 2009-06-15 10:09:00 I havent heard anything bad about either, although i would recommend one that can be put in an external and an internal computer enclosure... ZapperBoy10647 (11988)
782480 2009-06-15 10:35:00 Seagate had a slight problem a while back, but thats fixed now.

Both are good brands - I use them both in customers PC's and had only 1 Seagate failure in several years (that was the problem batch I mentioned)

What hard drive -cannot- be put in an external enclosure or inside a computer?

For laptop drives, western digital generally have overall faster performance; their 5400RPM blue series is about the same speed as the seagate 7200 (a recent round up is at techreport.com). I'm not sure if the WD black series are better though.

Apparently 3.5" samsung are good value and have good performance too according to magazine reviews.

As for my limited experience, my first computer had an 80gb WD. It is over 7 years old now, still running strong. My 750gb seagate was doa, but after the rma, haven't had any problems since.

I think he means the ones where you can buy case+HDD seperate and easily take the HDD out, whilst the ones at DSE (pre assembled) are harder to get the HDD out but not impossible
