782447 2009-06-15 08:14:00 Hi all

I have an older laptop which has been sitting around in the company cupboard for some time now. It is a Compaq Evo N800v.

Anyways - the boss has said if you can get it going feel free to use it.

It boots fine but there is a username/password setup when it boots up. It also has the same username/password if booting into safe mode.

Nobody has any idea what the username or password may be.

I thought sweet - I will just boot from an XP Pro install disk, reformat, install XP and download the drivers off the web to get her going again.

Trouble is the damn thing won't boot from the cd drive. I don't have a spare lying around to see if it is the drive that is the issue or some setting not allowing that to happen.

I can get it to give me an option of booting from the notebook multibay but that just starts Windows booting into the password screen. The other boot option is the hard drive bay.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

782448 2009-06-15 08:33:00 Can you get into the BIOS to see if the optical drive is showing -- That may be passworded as well though. wainuitech (129)
782449 2009-06-15 08:59:00 I can F10 into the options screen - not that there are many options there.

The options are multibay (which I was hoping was the CD drive) or hard drive.

Can't see any specific reference to a CD drive anywhere.

782453 2009-06-16 01:10:00 Ok, grab your computer and download this: http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/
Once download isoBurn to a CD and boot from CD on the laptop, follow the faq section and you should get your password in 10 Minutes...

P.S sorry for advocating black/white/grey hat tools on these forums

Opth Crack doesn't always work and sometimes can take a long time if its a secure password
in the original Post the optical drive is not working so cant boot from a CD.

Was it H***n's Boot CD?

Work great, much better than Orhcrack, it can take hours if the password isn't alpha numeric
