| 782333 | 2009-06-15 00:37:00 | At our school we have a bunch of kinda old 1100 machines with about 256mb ram. Enough to run XP once. In all it's glory the powers that be hand out CA eTrust to schools which swallows memory like a black hole even with half the processes turned off. My question is, is there a free antivirus software, (doesn't have to be fantastic), out there that is not resource hungry that anyone can suggest. Don't need it for email just for looking after a filtered environment during web browsing. Also, I've managed to replace adobe reader with foxit, quicktime with quicktime alternative...is there anything else that people can suggest to get rid of or include for making these machines hum. (Yes I know more RAM etc but think 'mega poor' and thats us). Suggestions greatly appreciated. NT (Again today). :thumbs: |

I suggest you apply group policy restrictions such as flash drives disabled, certain apps can be run only etc, to minimise viruses and crap installed on the PC. | 782336 | 2009-06-15 02:18:00 | Avast free isn't an option for commercial environments if I remember correctly, and a school is most certainly a commercial environment (they may do discounts though). If you're going to pay for an antivirus product I strongly recommend nod32 - it's excellent at nabbing the nasties and has a pretty minimal footprint. If you're after a free one, then go with ClamWin - that one can be freely used for more or less anything you like. |

| 782337 | 2009-06-15 02:43:00 | An old version of MS Office would run wall on those specs (nothing before 97 though; Office 97 introduces the current version of the .doc file format). Use VLC if you can - plays anything (and therefore no need for QT alternative). +1 Erayd :thumbs: |
