625723 2007-12-30 04:22:00 Kikuyu doesn't have prickles. Its Auckland - its Onehunga weed.

Both of which don't exist down here, we have nice soft fluffy real grass..................

.................and stinging nettle.

Yes nettles were a nasty suprise to me when i moved here, what are the horrid little prickles with the little yellow flowers that grow through the grass here as we have a good dose of those out the front, i always assumed it was onehunga weed

625724 2007-12-30 06:08:00 Its too late............ the prickles are an after effect of the thistle plant flowering, this is the seed....... you need to spray in spring.........

Thistles? Well I sprayed mine 3 weeks ago and all the Onehunga weed is now dead. Seems to have done the trick. It might come back though...but all the prickles are now gone.

They probably got mutant prickles in Auckland:eek:

I don't find the nettle a big deal, its easy to weed out and doesn't sting much really.

What horrid prickles? We only have those large things that look kind of like spikey dock weeds. Again, easy to get rid of.

Auckland wins the national award for weediest city you know - it was in the Herald a couple of years ago, and all that clay makes it a b**** to weed.

625726 2007-12-30 07:57:00 My lawn is home to hundreds of different weeds., Its quite the sight when I let it grow for a couple of weeks. The lawn starts to look like a garden.

Wife is less then impressed, I try to not let it bother me.

Feel the zen.

625727 2007-12-30 08:40:00 Think outside the square: since it's really too late in the season to spray the horrible Onehunga weed, how about getting the dog fitted for shoes - Crocs are probably the way to go at this time of the year so he doesn't get too hot... :D johcar (6283)
625728 2007-12-30 09:52:00 Roundup will do the trick. :p

Or as a Workaround - What Microsoft would suggest if they grew grass - Where Shoes

We have a nasty little weed here called "Goatheads" ( . noble . org/WebApps/PlantImageGallery/Plant . aspx?PlantID=282&PlantTypeID=1" target="_blank">www . noble . org) which have horns on them and the barbs break off in your skin and fester if you don't get them out . They have non-reversing barbels on them to make them almost impossible to remove too .

Link here too ( . associatedcontent . com/article/233404/how_to_get_rid_of_goat_head_or_puncture . html" target="_blank">www . associatedcontent . com)

OK . . . . if we kill the nasty little things after the goatheads form, then we are stuck (oops . . literally) with them after the base stem and plant is long gone and dead from Roundup . You can't remove them without tearing the whole lawn out unless you let them go full cycle and then somehow the goatheads wither away and are gone until next growing season .

These nasty demons-on-a-vine will penetrate thin shoes and if you are barefooted . . you will die . You will die a horrible and festering death .

Remember that tree in "The Gods Must Be Crazy" . . . part II I think? These goatheads are worse .
