'$45000 spent on LCD flat screen televisions and playstations for prisoners.'

626797 2008-01-02 23:36:00 Oh Joy. I'll go commit a minor crime so I can be in jail for the next World Cup. Greg (193)
626798 2008-01-02 23:36:00 For most bums who live on the streets, thats a far better, easier and healthier life than their normal one. So we pay for them to watch TV. They should suffer. They should rot in a cold damp stone cellar somewhere. NZ's prison inmates eat better than most of us do. :2cents: Prison is not something to be feared in this country, and it should be.

Perhaps we should go to jail before the next world cup?

Edit - Great minds think alike! :p

Disgusting, yes. Not to mention that LCD screens are very fragile and it doesn't take much to crack a screen, and prisioners are hardly going to take care of the TV. CRTs are far more forgiving, and you can chuck stuff at them without them breaking. Whats wrong with them watching on a 14 or 21 inch CRT TV, if they need TV. Many tax payers can't afford a LCD TV them selves, let alone a plystation or xbox. So much for Reserve bank governer telling us not to spend our money, otherwise interest rates will rise, yet the governemtn spends on lavish stuff for the scum of society, which s what prisioners are when they are paying for their crimes. These government departments live in another world. How about the early xmas present that the polititians gave themselves with the 30 odd $170,000 BMWs, which are supposed to be environmentally friendly, but use more fuel than most cars.

And more than $4600 worth of PlayStation machines and videogames are lying unused in Prison Service cupboards after being withdrawn from use in late 2006.

The videogames - predominantly used by child criminals in residential facilities - were taken out of circulation after the Opposition raised concerns about the violent content of some games, and it was realised there was no national policy for their use in prisons.

Prison Service bosses said yesterday the LCD televisions required fewer wall mountings, which meant their were fewer items available for inmates to use to harm the screens, other inmates or themselves.

The sets - at an average $1270 each - were delivered to prisons across the country during 2007, for the use of both inmates and staff.

Waikeria Prison at Te Awamutu received nine televisions - one for every 115 inmates. The recently-opened Otago Corrections Facility near Milton received 11 new televisions at a cost of $21,000.

Not everyone is in jail for violent crimes either.
Some people are in their for thefts and so on.

Does having them rot in a stone cellar make us better?
Or would that make us as bad as some of them.

It was a bit of an exageration, but I do think NZ's prison system is far too soft. And doing anything to them doesn't make us any better or worse.

Doesnt mention that.

And yes I dont care if they are violent or nonviolent offenders, they knew the choice they were making, so screw them. Theiving is just as bad as say assault, rot in a cellar? Hell yea, thats a better alternative to paying them, feeding them and letting them have tv etc
