2009-06-14 09:29:00 | Hi everyone (again?) I just downloaded a copy of VLC Media Player 0.99. It is very versatile, especially the fact that it can play FLV files (saves converting when downloading from youtube). But just a small problem: if I launch it as a program (from the start menu), and drags a media file into it, it leaps into action in milliseconds. But if I open up a flv/mp3 file with double click, VLC will launch, but hangs for some time. It appears to hang longer with FLV than MP3. What is happening here? Is it the time taken to move the file from HDD to RAM? VLC is kinda perfect, except this small problem. It will be quite inconvenient to launch VLC, then dragging the file into it.

2009-06-14 10:07:00 | Yeah, when I drag flv files into VLC it takes longer to process than MP3. But that's not the problem. What I'm saying is that when I double-click, VLC pops up, and literally hangs/freezes, and its window whites out. It takes about 20 seconds for it to recover, and shorter with MP3. For every other player I tried (TTPlayer, WMP) doesn't do that with any file. So I wonder why... | LynX (14542) | |
2009-06-14 10:07:00 | Adding to Blam6, there is a slightly new format for FLV's, which may account for your issue. Have you tried a older FLV format file? | kahawai chaser (3545) | |
2009-06-14 10:17:00 | Why not download a dedicated FLV player then you wont have the problems - The one I use is Sothink Free FLV Player (www.sothinkmedia.com) - there are plenty of other free ones about as well. | wainuitech (129) | |
2009-06-14 10:24:00 | Thanks everyone for such sincere ideas . . . But I think you are misunderstanding me . What I'm saying is that when double-clicking on ANY file that is to be opened by VLC (e . g . you double-click a . doc file and Word will open up), it always hangs . This includes MP3, WMA, for starters . It's not just about FLV; it is more like a problem unique to VLC .

2009-06-14 10:47:00 | okayyyyyyy seems we got the wrong end of the stick -- ( don't just hate that :D ) OPPS..9.9 is the latest - I just opened mine 0.9.8a and its asking to update to it --- NOPE not yet -- try uninstalling 0.9.9 and download the older version 0.9.8a Download location (www.filehippo.com)( on the right) - install and see if that makes any difference. | wainuitech (129) | |
2009-06-14 17:52:00 | My guess is you have it configured to do something network-related on startup (e.g. streaming to icecast etc), and it's timing out while doing that before it does anything else. | Erayd (23) | |
2009-06-14 19:52:00 | Just out of interest what are you using as your youtube downloader as some don't work anymore I was using the soothink addon for FF but it stopped working for me | gary67 (56) | |
