Harvey norman will do this model for $2500 cash. Im pretty damn interested, but thought it might be worth running past some more experienced minds first!

Thanks

Prices are good on Phillips televisions, maybe try haggle a little more though if you can or shop around, I believe I have seen that model on sale for $2300 before.

From my use of this model (actually, all Phillips LCD's) I can say they give a decent picture if you plug in a good source, such as a PS3, BluRay player, HD-DVD etc. If it has to upscale anything at all, the picture turns out very grainy, have you by any chance compared the tv side to side to any other similarly priced set such as some of the higher end Samsung/Sony LCD's, the price is good enough, take it home and give it a trial if you want (see if you can tolerate the quality out of a normal dvd or sky box), most retail stores let you bring it back within around a week or so provided you bring everything back.

In the end, you can't expect too much from a $2500 47" LCD, if you need that size and have a budget to stick to, Phillips is not a bad option. If you watch dvd's, get a dvd player that upscales (ironically, the Phillips dvd players with HDMI out/upscaling that I've used work very well! Good enough that we use them for instore demo setups actually). The bigger the screen you go, the more important the signal is going to be for your end viewing pleasure. Can only say that Sony X series has outstanding upscaling compared to the rest, but the price is crazy on those. There are also several other good ones to look at such as Samsung which is far better priced than Sony as well as Panasonic, however all of Panasonics good stuff is in Plasma.

Agree. A mate who does repairs on TVs said that Philips have the worst failure rate for LCD/Plasma.

628887 2008-04-27 22:01:00 here's my 5 cents worth - LCD's tend to be slightly more energy friendly than plasmas but good plasma TVs can deliver superior pictures.. this said once the screen is in your lounge you probably wont notice the difference either way...

In regard to brand I'd suggest Samsung's Peone F8 or Sony's Bravia, A panasonic or Pioneer plasma or even a sharp Acquos...

The big things to look for are inputs (you want at least 3x HDMI , 2x component, at least 1x composite and maybe a VGA input), configurability (e.g. image controls such as white balance, brightness, contrast etc etc), for LCD refresh rate is also a biggie - aim for 100Hz, as is contrast ratios (the higher the better)

Remember that the TV is only half the equation - GIGO applies (garbage in garbage out), make sure the video you supply to the TV is top notch and you'll be rewarded... A good investment is a playstation 3 for upscaled DVD and HD blu-ray playback (there's also an HD freeview tuner module coming out for the PS3 near the end of the year) or the Oppo DV981 DVD player for upscaled DVD playback.. for freeview satellite try the topfield TFP6000 PVR which upscales to 1080 or if you're in a metro centre with a good UHF antenna try freeview HD.. Sky at launching their mysky II mid-year and if its anything like its SD predecessor, it'll be stunning to watch and use...

Hope this helps

628888 2008-04-28 19:59:00 Thanks for the replies guys . Im a little put off the philips now to be honest, but theres nothing else with these specs, at that price range (I wonder why . . . :s)

The only reason im really getting a bigger TV is that I picked up the ps3/gt5 package last weekend, and the 21" CRT just doesnt cut it at all . .

Ill let ya know how I get on

628889 2008-04-28 21:05:00 My parents got the Noel Lemming 42" Panny (basic model, 3 x AV & 1 HDMI) for $1400 in the weekend, its only 720p, however you wouldnt notice the difference between that and 1080p. SolMiester (139)
628890 2008-04-30 11:05:00 Ended up going with the above advice, especially after I got HN's salesman admitting Phillips was dodgy junk.

After a bit of haggling, I got the Samsung LA46N81BX 46" 1080p LCD for $3500 cash.

More than I wanted to spend but for the quality, I think it weighed up.

Whats your guys opinions on extended warranties? The Samsung comes with a 2 year manufacturers warranty, HN wanted to add in an extra 4 years @ $366, I declined. But it took a long hard thought to come to that conclusion..
