What a load of crap. There just happen to be a number of people who saw him for what they think he was and it has nothing to do with Tall Poppies.

629355 2008-01-11 14:41:00 Hillary has done more than anyone else to put NZ on the map - I'm guessing but I imagine that if you ask any foreigner about NZ Hillary 95% of the time would be the main item of recognition.
I am very sorry but in all the years of my travels Ed never even got one mention. In actual fact it was the Moa that got more of a mention.

You don't seem very sorry just mean-spirited.

629358 2008-01-11 20:58:00 It would be even more interesting to ask who Ed's ex respected the most .

Ed's ex?? Sir Edmund Hillary did not have an "ex" . :groan:

In my own mind I know who got there first and he wouldn't have got anywhere close to the top if it hadn't been for Tensing .

You could also say that about Tenzing .

Very interesting article ( . nzherald . co . nz/section/1/story . cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10486490" target="_blank">www . nzherald . co . nz) about Sir Ed on the NZ Herald's website .

Edmund Hillary never wanted to be famous . He and Tenzing climbed Everest because they wanted to - because it was there - not for the sake of Nepal or New Zealand, and certainly not for the glory of the British Empire .

Through all his years as one of the world's most famous men, Sir Ed kept his name and Remuera address in the telephone directory - he enjoyed yarning with the people who had the guts to ring up .

Aucklander Ollie Bradshaw, who 12 years ago famously rang Sir Ed to ask for help with his school essay, joined the tributes .

"Out of all the very important people in the country, the fact I could call up the greatest New Zealander out of the blue and he had the time to yarn to a 14-year-old pretty much sums the guy up," Mr Bradshaw said .

How many "famous" people and celebrities could you say the above about?

629359 2008-01-11 21:28:00 Nice reminder Foxy. There're also a few old rugby greats who're equally accessable. Modesty in our national heroes is not infrequent. Think too of our latest army VC recipient. Greg (193)

By the way I can remember the debate as to whether it was Ed or Tensing who got to the top first even though I was born a year after his climb. In my own mind I know who got there first and he wouldn't have got anywhere close to the top if it hadn't been for Tensing.

You obviously didn't watch the doc on last night, as it was hillary who worked out how to get to the top. It was also explained about who got to the top first, and why there was confsuion about it.

Ex, what are you going on about now. Your statements are not based on any facts.

I wish I knew that was on - it sounds interesting. Hopefully they will repeat it soon.

I think you can get it on DVD, and you may be able to rent it from your library or video store. THey may also replay it, but it wasn't scheduled. It was a really great program, especially the video clips of them climbing everest and how they all tied in with the story. It didn't know that they had actually filmed parts of the actual first climb.

Coming from the man who doesn't appreciate a shining example when he sees one.

I frankly don't give a damn what the likes of you are saying about Sir Ed. Regardless of how little you think he's done, what "little" he has done makes him undoubtedly a shining example of what a real man should be like.

So sad how some people cannot see the true light. :groan:
