629344 2008-01-11 06:00:00 Sir Ed did state that he didn't want a statue made of himself as a memorial, but what sort of memorial should be made in his name? Perhaps rename Auckland Airport, so most people coming into NZ is welcomed by his name.

629345 2008-01-11 06:32:00 My ex wifes Dad happens to be one person that I would consider did & does a lot more than EH (JP, rotary, countless community boards etc), however, has never had a mention probably because the self serving government now chooses which of its buddy to award.

As for honouring him, havent we been doing that since his climb?!!

Relax people, this is a forum of opinions, no one is disrespecting anyone.

Nobody would deny that the contribution from your ex wife's Dad wasn't valuable.
My Dad contributed a lot, similar to what you state, plus being a voluntary St John's officer. You can probably say a huge percentage of New Zealand Mums and Dads do (or did) likewise, as well as the present generation. Many hours are given daily...pretty well all without any thought of being 'recognised'. It's what a lot of New Zealanders tend to do, mostly without any recompense. Long may it remain so.
When you get someone who has become famous for their efforts, is prepared to remain as modest as Sir Ed and still 'get stuck in' then we can only be glad we had him.

Well. That certainly would be a talking point. And a fitting memorial to boot.

629347 2008-01-11 07:53:00 Damn. I only just heard the news. Certainly the end of a legend. He was a great great man and will never be forgotten. Greg (193)
629348 2008-01-11 08:03:00 Well he definitely had a colourful life and seems he never wasted a second.

Good on him.

I had to laugh at the tractor to the south pole story, I didnt realise that was him. Now Im going to reread that one.

RIP

629349 2008-01-11 08:11:00 Learned a lot tonight about his depression and how much June Mulgrew turned him around after the deaths of Louise and Belinda.

A big vote of thanks must go to David Lange for the foresight to make him the Consul to India - very, very good insight -- good for NZ, good for India and good for the man !

629351 2008-01-11 08:41:00 Perhaps the thing that most endeared him to NZers was sticking his finger up the nose of the stuffy Poms and beating them to the South Pole - and in little Fergy Tractors as well.

Great stuff and they've never forgiven us.
He was part of a support crew so what he did there was just an ego trip.

Agreed there are many people who serve without recognition however for many if not all of these people, recognition is not what they want. Sir Ed was one of those but when it is thrust upon you by the world then there arent many places you can hide. At least he was humble enough to say so and level headed enough to use his popularity to help others.
By chance did you ever get to ask your ex wifes dad who he respected? I am going to take a punt and say he would have respected Sir Ed Hillary.

Sad day on his passing. I just finished watching the commercial free documentary about his life and the climbing of Everest. Lots of interesting info and I for one did not realise the many things he acheived after the climb and the things he did for the people of Nepal.

Irrespective of your thoughts SolMiester to lambast those showing respect for anyones passing is just disrespectful. :groan:

It would be even more interesting to ask who Ed's ex respected the most.
By the way I can remember the debate as to whether it was Ed or Tensing who got to the top first even though I was born a year after his climb. In my own mind I know who got there first and he wouldn't have got anywhere close to the top if it hadn't been for Tensing.
