Telecom customers are disgruntled at faults with the Xtra broadband service.

The company's help line warns customers they may have trouble connecting but says technicians are working on the problem.

Aucklander Evan Fraser says his internet has been down since 7 o'clock last night. He says he works from home using the internet and the compensation he received for the last fault just was not enough.

Evan Fraser says he will consider switching service providers if the faults continue

At least he was actually offered compensation the first time. When my ADSL went down for over a day with slingshot, they refused me any refund for the day that it was down, and they blamed telecom, when it was a problem with their own systems. They also removed my posts from their forum and deleted my forum account. My parents have an XTra account, and apart from a few issues when they swithed to yagoo email, they haven't had any major problem with broadband.

628761 2008-01-11 00:43:00 If the isp xtra isp is so crap why is the biggest?
Why dont the people who whinge about it would just !@#$ up and change to another isp. These people are just serial whingers they wont change, they just like to whinge and want compo well they are just whingers and they deserve nothing because things breakdown there will be outages. Like diggers, chicks and cars if they have tracks, tyres or tits YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THEM.
I have had issues with xtra but they try their level best .I have stayed loyal to them because they were originaly the post office. When no !@#$ would give me a mortgage because I was single the Post Office did.
I bet these serial whinging bastards will start whinging if they change isps as well you cant stop the bastards from whinging.

marketing, most aucklanders already having tolls with them and not wanting to change tolls for a $10 discount... being the oldest player out there?

just because something is popular doesn't mean it's the best (or even good)

eg. norton AV, ipods, vista, dell, iphone, shortland street, etc etc

likewise just because something is unpopular doesn't mean they're bad

and compensation is a real thing when a company loses money/business due to a service provider failing to provide a service.

hell, even i've demanded a refund when ihug didn't raise my speed back up past 64kbps at the beginning of my new billing month; after a week i called and said i wasn't paying if they weren't providing. sure i didn't lose money, but i was paying them $50 for dialup speed!:yuck:

(and then there was the time where they claimed i dloaded several gb in one day thus putting me past my cap, despite on my connection that of data in that period of time being almost impossible, and 12 days later they changed their minds but didn't put the speed back up)

and finally, yes changing ISP will help, as that might encourage them to actually pick up their game instead of just blaming you and/or ihug for what is clearly their fault.

i made the mistake of signing into an 18month contract for a free connection fee and router, despite already having a router and then paying for wiring:groan:
as soon as it's up i'm planning on moving to xnet for broadband. i see they offer a better deal (pay for what you actually use) and hear they have half decent service

EDIT: ultimately though, the best improvement to my broadband will be either moving house or seeing another exchange put in nearby

It must be only affecting a few people, as I don't know any xtra users who are having problems . The media love to beat up telecom/xtra even though it is now largely NZ owned by mum and dad shareholders (Tall Poppy syndrome). However they are very lenient on other companies such as Vodafone/ihug which are owned by offshore companies. Vodafone recently had major problems with their roaming in Australia, which I heard lasted many days, but there was little in the news about it.

628765 2008-01-11 02:32:00 I had some minor Xtra problems last night (Tossed offline twice, which is unusual here & also couldn't get connected without several attempts)
No big deal.
So I wasn't surprised to need a few attempts at connecting again this afternoon.
Neither was it unusual to have to Login when I tried to open PressF1 - from my Bookmarks, as usual - as occasionally the comp loses the PF1 autologon.

But I was highly intrigued to find the opening page gave me a list of the first threads/posts of the current incarnation of PF1 back in December 04.
It was interesting reading what everyone liked/disliked about the "new" system - and what changes they requested - and which did happen later.
As I assume that wasn't Xtra's fault, I'm curious to know why PF1 would revert back in that way.

Anyone else had this happen?-

He wont switch because then he couldnt whinge to the media how much grief he has been caused. The media is also at fault because they publish the whinging from professional whingers. If some tinpot isp had problems it wouldnt rate the huge media circus exposure that xtra gets when it has an outage.
Perhaps xtra could learn from my business, if any customer even mentions an opposition company name even in jest, once they have paid their account due its closed and they are blacklisted. If they like the opposition so much they can use them. Bit like at airport you dont make jokes about hijacking a plane.

628767 2008-01-11 04:27:00 Overall I am pretty happy with Xtra as my ISP, I think the most annoying problems have been to do with email, but those have gone now with the change to yahoo as the email provider.

I have no reason to change ISP, but a good reason to keep using them: Go Large. Heh Heh :D

yeah the media here really needs some decent stories

what if the customer is having a whinge about the opposition, or are giving you important info? your measures seem a bit drastic.... and sound expensive in the long run:2cents:
