627725 2008-01-14 02:21:00 Elastrator rings are put around male lambs testicles, to cause them to drop off. The same process is used for removing haemorrhoids (piles) in humans. It is painless. Lamb tails are usually cut off with a sharp knife as a reason to prevent fly-blow in the back end. You don't need to see too many fly-blown sheep to appreciate the relief a clean back end is to a sheep! Richard (739)

Like custom cars, the extra flash ones are said to have been detailed.

LOL I like it.

Yes, sheep are relieved of the tail for hygiene and mercy reasons. Modern sheep accumulate waste on the tail because of lush feed and flies lay eggs. The maggots then burrow into the poor animals rear-end and literally drive the animal crazy. I don't agree with docking animals normally but with a sheep, it is essential.

As for rubber rings, these only work where tetanus isn't a problem - they cannot be used on all farms. Instead the tail is either cut off or burnt off using gas. However it is possible to inoculate against tetanus so rings are back in fashion.

The spermatic cord on ram lambs is clamped and broken above the testicular pouch by a clever device called an emasculator. :stare: This is sort of like the Devils Pliers for all you chaps cringing out there...... :D Again, rings can be used if there is inoculation. The purpose is to produce a eunuch lamb called a weather, which puts on weight and is well-mannered.

But wait - there is more. Instead of emasculation the preference now is to create a cryptorchid lamb which puts on weight and is docile...and even nicer to eat. :p The process is similar to emasculation but instead the testes are squeezed up into the abdomen and a ring placed around the pouch to prevent them descending. The lamb is left entire but sterile. Quite what the lamb thinks about it is yet unknown.....

And you thought females had it tough :dogeye:
