Maybe do some research then, because he has done a heck of a lot more than you implied. Your comments are based on you not knowing much about him, rather than the true facts of his life. |

You all need to get off your damn high horse . My ex wifes Dad happens to be one person that I would consider did & does a lot more than EH (JP, rotary, countless community boards etc), however, has never had a mention probably because the self serving government now chooses which of its buddy to award . As for honouring him, havent we been doing that since his climb?!! Relax people, this is a forum of opinions, no one is disrespecting anyone . Sorry but when you denigrate somebody that 99 . 9% of NZers respect and admire and has served as a real "role model" all over the world you give tangible evidence of the poverty of your vision on life . God - even Oprah Winfrey has honoured his passing but maybe that supports your argument |

Where have you been all your life, you are completely out of step with the way NZ and the rest of the world view EH In fact I find your comments quite disgraceful and you deserve all the comments you are getting . This is the sort of reaction that news of his death has created . Media across the globe reacted swifty and respectfully to the news of the death of Sir Edmund Hillary . The legendary adventurer's death knocked the American elections from the top of Google News, the world's biggest search engine's news site, which says nearly 1,000 websites are carrying articles on Hillary . A New York Times tribute to Sir Edmund was leading the Google worldwide site . |

There are some in the NZ society who enjoy to pull successful NZers down, and it is called Tall Poppy syndrome, and it can be ugly. Sir Ed was voted NZ greatest living NZer and rightly so, and the world coverage he is getting just shows how much of an important loss to the whole world he was. What he did was the equivalent to Neil Armstrong landing on the moon, and since then he has done so so much more for both NZ and those less fortunate in other places in the world. I mean who have we got now that is alive that compares. Perhaps some of our sporting heros, or Peter Jackson. Sir Ed did state that he didn't want a statue made of himself as a memorial, but what sort of memorial should be made in his name? Perhaps rename Auckland Airport, so most people coming into NZ is welcomed by his name. |

Solmeister unquote __________________ Well you stuffed up big time ! :groan: You've probably been watching too much sport !! News tonight was 100% Sir Ed and nothing re rest of the world ... but still have to have sport ! A weird world. World news or sport - you chose ?? Great touches - a Nepalese man and his family putting scarves around the statue of Sir Ed at Mt Cook. The flowers being left at his statue at Orewa. Very indicative. John Campbell's interview - very good - he and Sir Ed related well. Think there could have been more mention of Louise ! June Mulgrew has been very good but Louise was his first wife - very tragic. :illogical Misty :stare: |
