629215 2008-01-12 22:21:00 The USDOT (Federal licensing of vehicles, vehicle accessories etc . , for use in the US) has forbidden their import into the US .

Reason? They cannot achieve highway speeds .

Maybe one can be slipped into the trunk (NZ= boot) of a real car for emergency use only . :lol:

<edit: removed snide remark>

I also see that they are calling it: "The Peoples' Car" . . . isn't that a trademark violation?

Seems to me that when you translate "Volkswagen" into English, it comes out "Peoples' Car" too . The word "The" is spurious and not part of the trademark .

Perhaps they should just call it "The" . The word "The" is not trademark-able, I think .

LeCar was already taken .

Let me send a few pixs of a car that IS allowed on the US roads . . . right after this edit before it times-out .

Named for the three years represented in the overall design, the 789 Chevy is instantly recognizable by car buffs from around the world .

With a price tag of $135,000 you can get in and go anywhere, drive a speeds of up to 190 MPH and get 25 miles per gallon while cruising on the highway .

All 789 Chevy's are equipped with Corvette standard equipment including the 400 HP V8 engine . ( . 57classicchevy . com/789-chevy . html" target="_blank">www . 57classicchevy . com)

Arnie has had his Hummers all converted to Hydrogen . . and I think this is the company that did it .

I bet the NZ auto industry will try something like that as well . Can't have these cheap Indian cars coming in and undercutting our sales of expensive Thai made cars and the NZ gov will roll over and agree sighting enviromental issues like they have with 2nd hand Jap imports . .

It's been the law here for as long as I can remember . . . if it can't do 60mph or 97km/hr, it cannot get certified .

That French Deux Chevaux . . was that the name? The car Inspector Jacques Clouseau drove one into the pool in the Revenge of the Pink Panther . . . it was outlawed for the same reason, but then the ban was extended for the two-cycle engine too . . . and two horses was just not enough .

The Honda N-600s and Z-600s (ca - 1963 or so) were along the same idea . . . but they could run over 75 mph! (120 km/hr) . . and were very legal here . 40+ MPG and lots of power . . but NO crumple zone to speak of unless the driver had a Romanesque nose!

Good for India, bad for everyone else.

Now fuels gonna be more expensive thanks to all these countries that are only just coming into the car/driving world (or at least starting to)
