629324 2008-01-11 02:00:00 However, you are all extolling his virtues, but not one of them has anything to do with our country?!

My problem is the people who do wonders for this country but dont get knighted or the Queens order of the Garter......

Hey, the guys was old school nice, when he was young, he climbed a mountain, and to thank his helpers, he did some charity stuff.....??? I cant see how this amounts to one of the greatest NZer's, no rudeness intended.

Well perhaps if that is the way you look at it - Hillary has done more than anyone else to put NZ on the map - I'm guessing but I imagine that if you ask any foreigner about NZ Hillary 95% of the time would be the main item of recognition. And he didn't shout about his deeds others did that.

Who would you have in his place in NZ's history?

629326 2008-01-11 02:15:00 I'm with Sol. Nothing to make a huge song and dance about. Sure, he was a great man, but, whatever. People die every day and don't even get a mention. wratterus (105)

I think that is a bit disrespectful to make such a comment, especially on the day of his death. That sounds like Tall Poppy Syndrome.
He did a heap for the country, and far more than you state. He was also NZs ambassador to India, Nepal and Bangladesh, If you check the worlds major news websites, eg http://www.cnn.com/ he is the top story. He is 'one of' NZs most known NZers. Remember that he was 88, so over recent years he hasn't been able to do as much as he used to, but he did visit Nepal only last year.
Even Hillary Clinton said she was named after him, even though that wasn't quite true.

Who then would you say is a greater NZer, because I can't think of many?

629328 2008-01-11 02:52:00 The man is worthy of your respect, Even if your mind is too small to comprehend it. The very least you can do is ****.

And if it was just a mountain, then anybody could have climbed it.

It is the greatest mountain on Earth, The last frontier. Conqured after years of great effort from many people.

Sir Ed bought huge honour to our country through out his life, As a country we must show him his due, and honour him.

629329 2008-01-11 02:53:00 For all his fame he was a humble man, that in itself endeared him to so many thinking people, not only New Zealanders.
From the time of his Everest ascent he aspired to help those less fortunate.
RIP Sir Ed.

629331 2008-01-11 02:58:00 Perhaps the thing that most endeared him to NZers was sticking his finger up the nose of the stuffy Poms and beating them to the South Pole - and in little Fergy Tractors as well.

Great stuff and they've never forgiven us.

Especially as they didn't have oxygen supplies back then, and had to invent their own systems. These days people are able to climb it, but they take oxygen with them.

629333 2008-01-11 03:15:00 Bloody hell, what a bunch of brown noses......just because I fail to see how he contributed more than any other NZ, doesnt mean I am wrong or be rude.

You all need to get off your damn high horse.

My ex wifes Dad happens to be one person that I would consider did & does a lot more than EH (JP, rotary, countless community boards etc), however, has never had a mention probably because the self serving government now chooses which of its buddy to award.

As for honouring him, havent we been doing that since his climb?!!

Relax people, this is a forum of opinions, no one is disrespecting anyone.
