628396 2008-01-09 00:07:00 Found some metalex and turps in the shed whoopee will paint that on then let it dry then wax it like crazy. Thanks for all the tips, it's looking good, raising it up makes the downside of the reel a handy shelf. Will post a pic when I get hold of a digicam. Cheers.....m mark c (247)
628397 2008-01-09 05:10:00 I had a large boat (yacht) for a while that had teak wood on it . . LSS, I used some of the teak oil on unfinished pine, oak and other woods . . and it works great!

Non-sticky and takes a semi-gloss patina all by itself .

If you use a cabinet scraper blade on the surface, you'll get even shinier results .

628398 2008-01-09 07:22:00 Y thanks, SJ46. I have done a bit of brightening on boats but haven't got the stuff. I have metalex/turps 'it mostly - apart from the top and the top edge and a bit underneath the top - food surfaces. Looks great. Mixed up glue and sawdust to patch up some holes and gaps. mark c (247)

Round here are plenty of black cedar garage doors that have been done with it.

628400 2008-01-09 09:07:00 if you use linseed oil......do NOT 'screw up' the rag and toss it into a corner afterwards it's happened on more than one occasion that such rags have self combusted......
Hmmmm. Sorry, I am pretty sure it only happens once (watch very carefully). You need a fresh rag and more oil for another shot at it. :groan:

628401 2008-01-09 09:20:00 LOL R2x1. Took me a few reads to get it though.
I've metalex/turps mixture'd it twice and will do it twice more then wax it. Leaving 'breathing' space for moisture, and only waxed the top and top edge and lip underneath so peeps don't get get toxic garlic bread.
Thanks for the tip decibel.

628402 2008-01-09 09:33:00 Watch out for the wax! Bees and wasps will be trying to pinch it, and I can assure you those little dudes with the football jerseys have got the hot feet. R2x1 (4628)
628403 2008-01-09 09:41:00 Hmmm good point about the wax and the bees/wasps. That slipped my mind too - but the other waxed stuff around the house, windowsills, dining table, pelmets doesn't seem to attract them. I suspect the wax has enough other gunk in it to deter them anyway. Thanks for the tip......m mark c (247)
