2008-01-07 06:12:00 | FIRST QUESTION Hi, I’d like to do a little consumer survey with your help. I wont tell you too many details yet as I want an unbiased honest opinion. The question is if you had bought a ceramic hob of a reputable brand how long would you expect it to last without any thing going wrong and in particular the rotary switches? I appreciate your help One of the Consumer magazines within the last few years listed all household appliances, and the time period you should expect them to last. Any less, and you could claim full or partial cost from the retailer under the CGA depending on the circumstances.

2008-01-07 06:22:00 | The most important question of all is the stove made in Communist China? If it is buyer beware or you got what you paid for applies. If it is made in Western Europe you should expect the knobs to last 5 years C1

2008-01-07 06:55:00 | SECOND QUESTION AS PROMISED Ok thanks for your answers. Here’s some more info on this question. My old moffet oven lasted like forever with no problems. It got thrown out because we did a kitchen revamp. The new one is a European branded Ariston bought in November 03 for $767.00 and a normal retail then of $1099.00. Now to my way of thinking the switches should last more than four years and to throw fat on the fire the warrantee booklet says that if UK customers register they get further four years parts only cover on top of the standard one year guarantee. In New Zealand we supposedly have this great system called the CGA (Consumer Guarantees Act). The problem is that it’s a bit vague in places. Section 7 Meaning of “acceptable quality” (1)(e) states Durable,- As a reasonable consumer fully acquainted with the state and condition of the goods, including any defects would regard as acceptable, having regard to- (f) The nature of the goods: (g) The price (where relevant): It goes on in regards to other statements and representations made. Another way of looking at it is if you had known that the switches would start breaking down at four years would you have bought the hob? I’m sorry to ramble on but I’m really interested in what you think! Am I being unreasonable? It’ll cost somewhere around $160.00 to get it repaired. Thanks everyone you've been a great help. Any more opinions now? Promise this is the last I'll bug you on the subject!

2008-01-07 08:05:00 | What has happened to the knobs, have they become so stiff that you can't turn them without great difficulty or are they electrically faulty? | zqwerty (97) | |
2008-01-07 08:10:00 | We've got a Simpson, had it for 10 years & nothing's gone wrong with it. We wouldn't have another ceramic, they look flash, but they are a pain, mainly because if they're not kept polished & spotless they look dirty & horrible. | 628032 | 2008-01-07 08:13:00 | What has happened to the knobs, have they become so stiff that you can't turn them without great difficulty or are they electrically faulty? Whats happened is that when you turn the control knob for one of the elements, that element turns on full bore without thermostatic control. Another argument for not leaving a pot unattended!

2008-01-07 08:19:00 | SECOND QUESTION AS PROMISED Ok thanks for your answers . Here’s some more info on this question . My old moffet oven lasted like forever with no problems . It got thrown out because we did a kitchen revamp . The new one is a European branded Ariston bought in November 03 for $767 . 00 and a normal retail then of $1099 . 00 . Now to my way of thinking the switches should last more than four years and to throw fat on the fire the warrantee booklet says that if UK customers register they get further four years parts only cover on top of the standard one year guarantee . In New Zealand we supposedly have this great system called the CGA (Consumer Guarantees Act) . The problem is that it’s a bit vague in places . Section 7 Meaning of “acceptable quality” (1)(e) states Durable,- As a reasonable consumer fully acquainted with the state and condition of the goods, including any defects would regard as acceptable, having regard to- (f) The nature of the goods: (g) The price (where relevant): It goes on in regards to other statements and representations made . Any more opinions now? Promise this is the last I'll bug you on the subject! You will definitely be covered by the CGA if it is a product defect, as 3 or 4 years is not long enough for such a product . The warranty provided is really irrelevant, and is really only for businesses, as the CGA doesn't apply to businesses . However it depends on what the fault is with the knobs, and whether they have broken through poor build quality, or whether they have been misused . Without more information it is difficult to assess . I have successfully got a 4 year old microwave over repaired under the CGA where the magnetron failed, but I did have to write the retailer a letter to state my consumer rights . The consumer website does have some free template letters you can use . You could either get it repaired through the retailer you purchased it from, and then claim back the repair costs with your letter (which is what I did) . Or you could ask them to repair it for free, under your rights under the CGA . If they refuse, although I think they will only refuse if they claim the fault is your fault (eg misuse), you can then take it to the disputes tribunal .

2008-01-07 08:22:00 | I think european appliances are like european cars. Overpriced crap Mielle are supposed to be a good brand, although I don't know how reliable they are. We have European made Asko washing machine (15years old) and dishwasher (8 years old), and they are reasonably reliable.

2008-01-07 08:27:00 | It's a fault that you shouldn't expect after just 4 years and it's a dangerous fault as well. Should be fixed at no cost, irrespective of the fact you got it on sale... | johcar (6283) | |
