627879 2008-01-07 03:36:00 This trick is probably the most common Thomas. And it generally works.

Yep - I use it many times a day. Hasn't failed yet. Have even taped a snapped card together and it worked! :p

627880 2008-01-07 03:48:00 I went in to a bank today to get a new card because mine was scratched too much and they just gave me one in about 20 mins. Maybe its time to call the bank up and ask some questions. beeswax34 (63)
627881 2008-01-07 04:33:00 You can probably get them to re-encode your old card if its otherwise ok, why shell out a large fee for a new one, go into your bank and ask. feersumendjinn (64)
627882 2008-01-07 05:44:00 Eftpos cards don't have expiry dates. Only credit cards.
Mine expires 2010. I used to think they went on forever, too ;)

Some do, some don't My TSB bank one doesn't, but my national bank one does.

627884 2008-01-07 06:13:00 Mine says "Expires end 11/08". I may be on borrowed time R2x1 (4628)
627885 2008-01-07 08:05:00 I am quite surprised at the interest in my enquiry.
Thank you to all who replied.
I did in fact go to my doctor this morning and the receptionist was unable to get my card to work. She just did what others have recommended - stuck a piece of sellotape over the black bit. It worked perfectly. This is the first I have known of this tip. Strange that my bank (National) did not tell me whereas my doctors receptionist did.
But in 35 years the National has been excellent with me. I chose them from the UK and when I arrived they couldn't do enough to help. Of course those people will have retired or moved to other banks long ago. But I will stay with them.
And my card does carry an expiry date.

627886 2008-01-07 20:46:00 I suspect banks don't publicise the Sellotape remedy because there is possibly a slight risk it might come loose inside their ATM machines which use a much thinner slot than a shop counter eftpos unit bonzo29 (2348)

They send new cards within a few days, but you have to go back into the bank to put your pin on it.

Forgot to state that I have NEVER got a card this close to it's use-by date, previous record was 18 months before expiry date when the card failed by delaminating. The fore-runner to the present card lost it's data after about 3 weeks. I must be a card-killer.
