| 627828 | 2008-01-07 07:00:00 | It'll run as a media centre but realistically ONLY if you up the CPU to 900MHz (see my sig), otherwise 630MHz is just too slow It'll play DVDs if you hook up an external player and most DivX movies, even some h.264 (If running at 900MHz, depending on the decoder, the rest, the framerate, bitrate etc) It does games pretty decent, but again something about the shared memory means theres quite a decent boost in performance. The stock standard Xandros OS is really quite fast thou! Even running at 630MHz! Boot up time is 12 seconds, shutdown in 4, OpenOffice etc all runs fine, as does a combination of having Skype, Gaim, Firefox (and 12 tabs), OpenOffice Writer, Adobe Reader, amaroK, WINE playing PokerStars, all running fine :) I was honestly blown away. One thing to note, it only has VGA output, not RCA... Is that version of linux available for download anywhere? I wouldn't mind having a play with it. Or does the disc that comes with lappie have it on it |

So how do you reinstall if you have to? with the included disc? What are you meant to do with the source code? |

Yeah - a restore DVD is provided, however as I bought mine overseas, it isn't in English (which isn't particularly helpfulfor me). Also, due to the way it's set up, you can actually "restore" to factory defaults by pushing a button on the bottom of the laptop. |

| 627832 | 2008-01-08 18:59:00 | Bump. In case you guys didn't know, it's OK to break that warranty sticker that covers the RAM slot. www.eeeuser.com I'm looking to upgrade mine to 2GBs. It uses DDR-2 667 RAM (and only) right? |

Be wary that the default Xandros linux kernel cannot handle 2GB of ram - there is more detailed explanation for why, and how to deal with it on Eeeuser.com. |

| 627835 | 2008-01-08 22:57:00 | Hi all, long time no post. I really like this litte pc, I was wondering if anyone had bought one from jb hi-fi recently. Their latest mailer and in store as of today has it listed at $559 or $569 with the price crossed out and the words "ask for a jb deal" under it. Any one know what they mean by this? I did ask a staff member what the price was bt was just quoted the shelf, crossed out price. I really should have asked what the JB deal was. Has anyone noticed that they run a bit warm? Chill, how does it run heat and battery wise when clocked at 900mhz? |

| 627836 | 2008-01-09 02:46:00 | Batteywise, it lasts a little less of course, but still lasts quite a while Heat -- It gets up to around 65 degrees Celcius but never over (While at 900MHz), around 4 degrees higher than I can get it at 630MHz I have the disc, if you want me to mail you it (Mine is in English)? Could have a play around with it under VMWare or something? Check eeeuser.com - I think they've made some ground testing with it there. Also, guess what DSE has now? Black ones! Search dse.co.nz for "EeePC", they're in-stock Jan 21st. No idea about the JB deal or whatever, I got mine from DSE, without the extra HDD (Although its a good deal that DSE are offering). Also, on a side note, having the SD / SDHC card plugged in will drain battery life, and on a full charge trim between 20 seconds & 3 minutes from the 3 1/2 hours life... NOTHING really :D It handles 800MHz memory fine from what Ive read, but it just runs it slower... And yes, not difficult to patch the kernel so it reads more than 1.5GB Memory :) |

| 627837 | 2008-01-09 03:00:00 | I've got a black one (bought it overseas in December), and would recommend it over the White ones. They look a lot more "professional" and solid, and are less likely to look dirty after a while. The coloured Surf models (light green, pink, light blue) look ok, but I'm sure they'll also be prone to getting dirty due to the matte surface. | somebody (208) | ||
