629317 2008-01-11 00:06:00 LOL, why is he such a great man?, he climbed Everest like 40 yrs ago, and has been riding the glory ever since.
As far as I am concerned, there has been numerous other individuals who have done more for this country and never get a mention.....

He's done considerably more than climb a damn mountain but I'm not about to list all his achievements here , suffice to say he was a great man and that his death was also recognised by front page news in the UK broadsheet newspapers

Because he gave everything he could a go and most often succeeded. But most of all he stuck to his principles through thick and thin and was always humble no matter what achievements.

Sadly people with his values are conspicuous by their absence these days - these days of "I'm alright Jack" and never mind your fellow man.

629320 2008-01-11 01:50:00 Well, I only know about his climb of Everest....... SolMiester (139)
629321 2008-01-11 01:54:00 He found the Himalayan Trust or something, which is responsible for building many schools and hospitals for remote Himalayans.

He also contributed to many other countries and his charity is profound.

Well add to that, that unlike other adventurers he didn't bugger off once he had climbed the mountain, he fundraised and built schools and hospitals (en.wikipedia.org) in nepal, he also drove a tractor across the south pole, drove a jet boat up the Ganges etc
