628266 2008-01-07 14:40:00 Hadda drop a geek-o buddy off in Lost Wages, Nevada this AM . . . .

HD-DVD pulled their display off the floor this AM here in Las Vegas . This bodes badly for HD .

It looks like Blu-Ray is the new standard . . . . kinda like the VHS/Beta fight a bunch of time ago .

Also: Bill Gates has delivered his LAST opening speech as he is stepping down from his daily routine at M$ and turning the reins over to a new puppet .

Catch this: there was NO mention of VISTA during the whole invocation and it is apparent that the general disdain and non-acceptance of that OPSYS has blackened the eye of M$ for the "little people", even quite a few huge corporations who REFUSE to commit to a system of questionable value especially in the vein that it has the Semi-official nickname: ME-II .

Could THAT be the reason Uncle Bill has given it up? We'll see as the year unfolds and when we actually see how tightly he hangs onto the reins as he slowly lets them slide through his fingertips .

Weather report: Semi-officially, Mammoth Mountain/Ski Resort (yuppie-ski-resort) got 16 to 18 feet of snow (about 6 meters, I think), half of that is dry powder, while WE (the Royal "WE") got about 1½ feet ( . 5 meters) of snow in the local foothills .

The Cajon Summit has about 14inches/36cm of new snow . I have to cross that pass in an hour or so .

Temps are cold today at 28ºF/-2 . 5ºC, but this time next week is projected to be 75ºF/24ºC and sunny .

I will be back at the home hearth later this morning . See y'all!

628267 2008-01-07 18:03:00 The HD DVD thing is bad for this part of the world if Blu-ray wins.

I see the ever insightful Gates prediction that this would be the decade of Hidef. Gee even the most tech illiterate could see that.

Why is the HD DVD thing bad for this part of the world ?

Perhaps because a closed standard is a bad thing in principle regadless of the merits of either system? (Not just in this part of the world.) A range of "standards" is not too good a thing either, for obvious reasons.
However, I am grateful that it wasn't decided by a bunch of grey faceless bureaucrats somewhere. (Probably by a bunch of bean counters, and that is almost as bad.)

628270 2008-01-07 20:32:00 HD DVD pulled their press conference etc a couple of days before CES when Warner Bros announced that they will be going Exclusive Blue Ray after may.

I don't think the message of his keynote was really on Vista - he did mention that they were happy with their progress. I think what he was trying to get at is the integration of many services into one - think of all the IPTV stuff for the Xbox and the Live stuff for windows.

I agree, it wasn't as big as past Key notes.

Maybe they were planning to announce the Xbox 360 ultimate with the integrated HD DVD player, but given recent news, i doubt that will happen

628271 2008-01-07 21:10:00 This pie graph shows the market share of which studios (movie companies) use HD DVD or Blu Ray.

As you can see, Blu Ray is winning :

I may have writen that wrong. HD DVD is good for this region as it's content is region free. Blu-ray is not except that WB BD titles currently are so you can buy from Amazon or the like. If BD wins then all BD titles will no doubt be region locked and if you buy a NZ region B player your Amazon stuff region A will not be playable or you will have to cough up $40~60 for a new NZ Bd release if indeed they are released here. If BD does win then I will be waiting for region free Blu-ray players to be avialable before I buy into the Hidef format as I did with SD DVD

628275 2008-01-08 09:50:00 Also just been reading that Paramount may also now switch to Blu-Ray.
HD-DVD is dead
Glad I didn't buy an HD-DVD drive for my Xbox 360!
