2008-01-07 04:03:00 | I know youse guys are in NZ and I'm in the US . . but there's a nagging question that I don't believe has any zone qualifications for a decent answer . Over the air reception in my area is somewhat spotty . . some channels are great . . especially the upper UHF ones . . . while some of the powerful LA stations won't come in at all . . or very much anyway . This is the analog side of the reception I am speaking of here . We go to digital next year, and already there is a lot of bad information, wive's tales and lack of knowledge about it . If I have a rather weak station now in analog, will it get a better signal in digital? I remember when the cell phones went from analog to digital . . . there were huge blank areas instantly . . and those with analog units could get thru even if there was a little static . . . in a nutshell, digitals didn't work well for a few years until enough repeaters got into place . Is this how digital tv is gonna be or not?

2008-01-07 05:35:00 | If I have a rather weak station now in analog, will it get a better signal in digital? provided they don't do anything silly with the bandwidth, any weak line of site reception should be fine. however the big gray area is the non line of site reception. i remember years ago when digital was first talked about here. the examples of it overseas where so-so. anything with ghost problems or interference problems simply caused the pic to drop out at random. it was compared to our nicam sound system, in some places nicam will simply drop in/out or be very staticy even tho the analog picture and sound where fine. i haven't been following it lately so i don't know if they have improved the systems or not.

If all things end up much the same then maybe your weak signal just won't make it. But it's more likely that newer installation will be better. Via satellite will depend on your dish etc. |

2008-01-07 14:50:00 | He's talkng about in USA they have had digital for 5 years or more . . 2009 is their cutoff date . The link I gave was for a U . S forum that has a sub forum especially for his city . I am OTA/Analog with a 250-mile antenna . . or one that is supposed to get a decent analog at that range . The official word is that DTV is supposed to occupy a narrower bandwidth per signal, allowing more use of the intermediate channels or freqs in-between . They also say that the standard tv antenna is going to be very good . . some people even being able to use rabbit ears for their signal harvesting instead of ugly rooftop units . Maybe? We have multiple accesses to TV here . . satellite, cable, DSL, OTA, Microwave-direct-by-terrain . . . I chose to NOT buy into anything until it all shakes out . . . . like the 1080i vs 1080p debate . 1080i looks like a dead dog now . Gotta drive now . . . leaving Zzyzx, California ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/Zzyzx,_California" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org) . . . .

2008-01-07 18:20:00 | I have been reading about Digital TV lately and the only thing FreeView Satellite lacks is HD. I can't believe they only wanted to release HD on Digital Terrestrial. | msnforum (11610) | |
