783602 2009-06-19 08:36:00 Can I get away changing just my motherboard and cpu. Will my HD be ok?

I'm thinking of a 1366 and i7 in place of 765 and quad core cpu.

783603 2009-06-19 08:39:00 If the current one isnt i7 then no, you may have to reformat, you should be able to use the same hdd, if thats what you mean. Depends what ram is in it and what the i7 uses. On whether you have to change the ram as well Speedy Gonzales (78)

783605 2009-06-19 08:59:00 I hope I can keep my ram. Currently have 4 gigs 0f DDR 3 1600. I notice the 1366 has ram speed listed as 1300. Will the 1600 be OK?
I was hoping to get away without reformating hard disk. Just a bios flash

783607 2009-06-19 09:05:00 No dont think you'll be able to install an i7 mobo and CPU, without reformatting. As the hardware will be different as well. And it may crash if you dont reformat. The ram should be fine (altho this will depend on WHAT i7 mobo you get). I see ASUS have created a new mobo (i7) that supports USB 3 and SATA 3. Only thing is, you probably wont find any hdds or USB devices, that support either in NZ yet. I dont think the mobos are out yet either Speedy Gonzales (78)

783610 2009-06-19 10:04:00 Even if you were to sell it here no one would probably have enough money for the CPU! :crying qazwsxokmijn (102)
783611 2009-06-19 10:41:00 You'll probably need to reformat, although I've seen people remove the mobo drivers, then install new hardware and install new chipset drivers.
