783497 2009-06-18 21:58:00 Hi, I have a Canon multifunction printer/copier/fax (mx700) and I want to have it connected to a line that I can also use for calls. The Canon is supposed to handle this, but apparently has fundamental flaws (not fixable) on this model and starts trying to pick up voice calls and generally just doesnt handle fax/phone like it should.

Does anyone know of any low cost device that perhaps acts as a splitter. I am guessing that it would plug into the phone socket and switch to the fax or to the phone seeing the Canon doesnt handle this properly. Any suggestions?

783498 2009-06-18 22:31:00 If it doesnt work properly, I doubt a splitter will do anything. Since the prob is inside / part the MFC inside. Not when you plug it into a phone jack. If its got a flaw in it, take it back, email canon, get a refund. And get something else. Speedy Gonzales (78)

I would suggest to go fax to email and email to fax. No hassles, you still can scan the documents and send. All 24/7 accessible wherever you can access your email box.No modems either, one line for everything.
Here (www.digitalisland.co.nz) an affordable solution. I have no affiliation, just a suggestion.

783500 2009-06-18 22:40:00 Canon faxes are a pain, well the older ones anyway. They are fine on a dedicated line, but they seem to struggle differentiating between voice and fax calls. We stopped selling them a few years ago, just had too many people not happy with they way it had to be set up.

Love canon printers, but their faxes are sub-par. It can't hurt to talk to canon about it, don't know ifd you'd get anything out of them but it's worth a try.

I don't know of any such splitter device, it would have to be a reasonably advanced piece of equipment if it did exist, I can't imagine it being a cost effective option if you were able to track one down.

Brother's faxes seem to be quite a bit better in this area.

783501 2009-06-18 23:45:00 If you are using Telecom's Faxability with different ring types then:
SmartRing+ Ring Decoder manufactured by Saturn Telesystems Wellington.
I used one of these for several years. It decodes the faxability ring and sends the call to the fax machine. It ignores voice calls so that you can answer your normal phone.
If you're not using faxability then I doubt there's much you can do to split between fax and voice calls, other than getting Canon to help.
