783399 2009-06-18 11:46:00 The XP cd had the modem drivers slipstreamed on the cd. The modem was fine (and working), until I removed it, then I put it back in, in exactly the same PCI slot (it was in originally), it said there were no more free resources left (so it wouldnt work (error 12)?

There's actually NOTHING else in the case (besides the videocard, and 3 spare PCI slots with nothing in them), 1 hdd and 1 dvd burner.

But if I put it in another PCI slot, it was fine (obviously, it'll have #2 after it in device manager). BUT, if I put the modem back in (the original PCI slot), then delete all the entries for #2 and the original entry (without the # after it in the registry), then reboot, the modem was fine again? No error in device manager, saying there were no free resources left

Sounds a bit odd doesnt it. WHAT resources would it be talking about, when there's nothing else in the case using them? The parallel port is disabled, since I'm using a USB printer. The game port is enabled but nothing is plugged into it

783400 2009-06-18 12:17:00 Is this a new installation or has it had devices in the PCI slots previously?

I would check for hidden devices .

I have seen this effect before but it is pretty rare .

783401 2009-06-18 13:10:00 The modem has always been in this PCI slot. It was already in the slot (and the drivers were already installed, and it was working). All I did was remove it, and put it in the same slot. It is a pretty recent reinstall of XP, but this error has never appeared before (till tonight - it wasnt until I removed it it said there were no free resources). Speedy Gonzales (78)

783403 2009-06-18 13:39:00 Yer I know what it means, the question was why did it do it. When it was already installed / the drivers were installed, (during the install), it was working prior to removing it from the slot, but putting it back in the same slot, caused the no more free resources entry in device manager (when all I did was remove it)? 783404 2009-06-18 21:22:00 I had that once ages ago when XP was new.
Added a modem and it conflicted with sound.

Because XP run the IRQs and doesn't really allow you to change things.
I had to mess about with the order it saw things.

In the BIOS is resource allocation set to BIOS runs it or O/S?
Try changing it.

783405 2009-06-18 22:13:00 Guessing you rebooted without the modem, between when you pulled it out and installed it again.

Guessing it thought it was a second modem installed in the same port and had already allocated resources for the first time.
This is probally why when you removed the devices in the device manager it came back to life.

783406 2009-06-18 22:19:00 If you mean PNP, thats on yes. You have the option of either selecting PCI or reserved for whatever, and the DMA channel. Its OK now, I deleted all of the entries (relating to the modem, as stated in post #1), then rebooted, that fixed it.

The difference is, the modem was already installed, and working (I didnt just put the modem in, when it decided to say there were no more free resources). Umm yer, well I had to turn it off to remove it. I suppose I did reboot (well you wouldnt pull a modem out / put it back if it was running would you)? Deleting the entry in device manager itself didnt fix the prob (when I rebooted, it said the same thing (no more resources). It was when I deleted all entries for the modem in the registry, (after I had put it back in the original slot). then rebooted, that fixed it

783407 2009-06-19 00:17:00 Had this happen so many times when trouble shooting hardware issues I made it a habit to swap the modem to another PCI slot when putting the PC back together.Sometimes just temporary so it can reallocate the assigned resources.

As Rob said it registers it as a second modem and tries to assign it to com port 1 which is already allocated to the same modem in the same slot. In some cases it all looks fine untill you try and dial out....

Yer I know what it means, the question was why did it do it. It's a computer - it does what it likes.
