783000 2009-06-17 10:21:00 I have been given a laptop to have a look at. It is a compaq Presario V1000.

It won't start without the battery in it. Then again, it requires mains to start as I think the battery may be shot.

Anyway; when you push the power on button, the fans start, the harddrive light flickers once, and then it shuts down. Completely. It doesn't even get to start the screen
I have slaved the harddrive, in case of failure, but the drive reads perfectly with no problems as slave

When the owner was telling me what was happening (basically what I have just described) I suspected harddrive or mobo failure. Apparently one of the USB connectors has been faulty for a while as well (whereby if you accidentally knocked something in the USB port, the computer would shut down).

Any ideas from the gurus?

Pull out components, HDD, RAM, Optical drive, then try. It should beep like a mad thing - if it does then there's hope.

If not, refer to the first line.

783002 2009-06-18 10:20:00 Pulled out harddrive, optical, RAM and restarted it. Got the keyboard lights to flash (probably because the main keyboard ribbon was disconnected) but no beeps and then it shut off again

Sounds like its a dead one...

Question: how can one re-attach a ribbon that is not very long, situated in the middle of the laptop with very little gap. Tried long-nose pliers, they just get there, but are too cumbersome. Its like I need a lonnnnnnnnnnnng pair of tweezers, but the longest I have are 5" long and too short by about 4" (allowing for enough handle to close the tweezers)

Customer unfortunately wants the laptop back in one piece, I want to make sure its fully together in case they get someone else looking at it

783003 2009-06-18 10:44:00 Edit; never mind. Each laptop has a different way of taking something off etc

Why can't they make these things all the same?

783004 2009-06-19 08:50:00 Right.... computer is now working again :illogical
After ringing owner and telling them computer was dead, I started to put it all back together. Noticed the fan was happily spinning away, then realised I had pulled power supply out.
Uhh... WTF??? this computer not supposed to run on battery only...
Also noticed a heap of dust between fan and back vent although it wasn't impeding the fan at all. Cleared it all out anyway, then decided for the heck of it to reboot. No beeps, but it did let me know there was no system disc.

Put RAM, drives etc back in and she boots to Windows, and will even run on battery (once I had charged it)

783005 2009-06-19 10:54:00 Overheating?

That doesn't explain the shutting down when knocking the USB port....: s

783006 2009-06-19 11:54:00 True

But then again, how does a cold computer overheat within 5 seconds of the power button being pressed?

Is there an airflow sensor in there or something?

783007 2009-06-19 22:45:00 How did you re-attach the short ribbon?

Good result.

783008 2009-06-20 01:38:00 How did you re-attach the short ribbon?

Good result.By remembering that most laptop keyboards really only clip in place, and that under the keyboard is a gap whereby you can re-attach all connections
