1439418 2017-09-20 05:17:00 Happy Wednesday, late afternoon to youse guys!

It's raining like all 60 here in Hamilton, Montana . I'm toasty warm from the wood stove running, and I'm sitting here in my warm fluffy bathrobe, thinkin' of youse all - and wishing a bunch of youse wuz here, enjoying the fishing and the outdoors .

It's also 40ºF degrees here (No . . . I still don't DO sillymeters!) Winter's a-coming!

I've been cutting wood and splitting it into nice 18 inch chunks for the stove - and although I'm 71 now, and have a new right knee - I'm still enjoying the labor of it all . I sleep the sleep of the dead until first light and then I get up and at 'em again .

Busy - that's the way to live to a ripened age - or it'll kill you . Either case - huh?

This really is a technical question ---- wait for it!

And --- yeah --- I'm still futzing with my old 'puters that are running just fine - with an exception .

Running a (probably an old) version of Linux, and I don't know how to point the terminal to the desktop to install a driver .

Oh yeah - I had a really bad time with my forgotten password - but I got into the root/recovery section and just left the new password blank . That's the best thing to do for when or if I get senile .

Anyway - I successfully changed the password - how I forgot a password - I dunnow!

ANYWHO ----> :banana

I downloaded the driver for my Alpha wireless USB AWUS036H device, and somehow the (dumb - stupid - ignorant - idiotic) instructions to install the apt thinks that I can get it downloaded from the internet onto the same computer that needs a driver to make the wireless unit work!

That's nuts!

OK - so what I did was use another 'puter to download the driver(s) and I stuck the compressed files unto the Ubuntu desktop - so far, so good - right?

Then I EXTRACTED that same file and it is happily sitting right next to the . tar . gz file on the DESKTOP .

OK --- here's where it gets crazy* --- I need to somehow get the TERMINAL to SEE that extracted driver that's been extracted to the desktop .

* substitute "here's where I gets crazy"

The following command (I believe) needs the driver to be in the DOWNLOAD section of the file system - 'cause I can see the word: "Downloads" in the command line!

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-'uname -r'
cd Downloads/rt18187L_linux_1041 . 0202 . 2012
make
sudo make install

Just what substitution can I use to point the installation process to the DESKTOP - where the extracted file now resides?

I tried a few variations:

cd Desktop/rt18187L_linux_1041 . 0202 . 2012 (this didn't work)

cd Desktp/rt18187L_linux_1041 . 0202 . 2012 (didn't work either)

cd Desktops/rt18187L_linux_1041 . 0202 . 2012 (nope too!)

cd Desks/rt18187L_linux_1041 . 0202 . 2012 (whatcha think?)

/rt18187L_linux_1041 . 0202 . 2012 (don't be silly - this was bad too)

1439419 2017-09-20 06:17:00 Ok, it's a bit long to see what you wanted but here you go, in terminal type:

cd ~/Desktop/rt[tab][enter]

where [tab] and [enter] are the keys you press.

you should now be in the directory, from there you should do:
./configure

then:

make

then:

sudo make install

the problem that could arise is you are missing the build-essentials and the linux-headers so it won't build.

With some you can open the directory (rt18187L_linux_1041.0202.2012)
then right click in its window and select 'open in terminal'
that will open a terminal window within that working directory
failing that you could move the directory to Downloads, and the command would then work.

1439422 2017-09-20 06:34:00 Went into TERMINAL,

bassman@bassman-desktop:~$ cd~/Desktop/rt[tab][enter]

. . . . gets me this:

Bash : . /cd~/Desktop/rt: No such file or directory

Am I supposed to hit or hold the [tab] and [enter] keys? Do I hold them simultaneously?

No matter what I do, I cannot get through that first line . Am I missing some other lines at the front of this line?

cd[space]~/Des[tab]rt[tab][enter]

1439424 2017-09-20 06:40:00 Just looking at your terminal you would be at ~ which is your home directory, so cd Desktop/rt[tab][enter] would do Kame (312)

Aha! That's a good idea - move the file to DOWNLOADS.

Where is DOWNLOADS?

This is Ubuntu - forget the edition.

I have a minimal installation here - I just want to get it on line, as it has nothing but the original installation and not much more - OK - I put a pix or two in it just to see.....................
