But yeah, why buy a car like that? Plenty of other choices around and more reliable....and probably cheaper.

1439932 2017-09-28 19:21:00 Man I thought 50 dollars was pricey for my Honda Odyssey. I bought 2 keys and door lock for 8 dollars on eBay Auction and replaced the worn passenger door lock. I also made a "Slim Jim" (goo.gl) (images) door unlock tool, and a contorted wire hook - which I carry on car and have used - legally - of course to open doors for a few stranded people at shopping malls.

1439933 2017-09-28 20:33:00 $440 is not all that bad Greg. I've been quoted over $600 for a new key for a festy old Estima.

I would tend to agree with R2. buying an old Beemer is just asking for trouble. Why not something basic and Japanese?

1439934 2017-09-28 21:06:00 $440 is cheap for a BMW, the in-laws were quoted more than that for their replacement key.

Speaking of replacements -- Wait till the gearbox /Auto sh1ts itself - you may as well get your belongings you have in it, leave it where it is and walk away. Its cheaper to buy a another car.

1439935 2017-09-28 21:47:00 $440, that's cheap, the spare "key" for my Mercedes Benz B200 year 2006 is, hold your breath, $1500.

If I ever get a spare key that is, I only have one.

1439936 2017-09-28 21:52:00 With many brands , Genuine spare parts are often just a rip off regardless; be it keys, mech parts or widgets
I guess the local importers/manufacturers see parts(and keys) as a cash cow

1439937 2017-09-28 22:05:00 Mate pull your head in - spares of anything on Euro cars can be pretty pricey here.

If you can't afford one, don't buy one - but do your research first, and don't come here having a whinge!

Pretty much the case with most cars, not just BMWs.

1439939 2017-09-29 00:54:00 Car repairs are very expensive in NZ, in general, regardless of their make/brand. bk T (215)
1439940 2017-09-29 01:05:00 Man, I so hate dumb replies! *sigh* I expected better from R2X1, but sadly that's beyond his scope of reality.

Terry Porritt, you just don't have a clue. Not your fault. More sighs! :crying

If you've got a used BMW, be prepared for reality to be biting giant chunks off your butt repeatedly. $440 is going to be fondly remembered as the really cheap part. Don't let a BMW dealer test the key lest there be a large workshop account for installation, testing and removal.
