1439921 2017-09-28 08:00:00 I just bought an oldish BMW but it doesn't have a spare key. I hate the thought of losing the one and only. But can you imagine the cost to get a spare? Sheesh! Admittedly it probably has some sort of supersonic capabilities, but $440.00! That's a significant portion of the price I paid for the car in the first place! Greg (193)
1439922 2017-09-28 08:16:00 Why didn't you buy a new car? With BMWs, you get an extra key, a full tank of gas and a warranty. With luck, you might get a year of free servicing. The warranty and free servicing will likely make up for the difference in price between a new and a used one in 18 months.
If you can't afford a new BMW, then you CERTAINLY can't afford a used one.

1439923 2017-09-28 08:17:00 Can't you just get a plain key cut ? You don't need remote functions and bells and whistles for a spare key, just need to be able to open the door and use the ignition.

Edit: presumably you have a "keyless" entry . That's too modern for me :)

Terry Porritt, you just don't have a clue. Not your fault. More sighs! :crying

1439925 2017-09-28 09:31:00 I agree Greg, you cannot just get a key cut off the other one. When there is a remote with keyless entry, the key and the remote are sort of “married” , or configured to each other. I had to get a new remote thingy for my Ford Falcon I’d just bought because the previous stupid owners broke it and couldn’t be bothered replacing it. $225 later.......

1439926 2017-09-28 09:34:00 Tongue in cheek but from what I can gather you don't buy a BMW, you buy a couple of keys and the Beemer comes with them. Marnie (4574)
1439927 2017-09-28 16:08:00 Try Ebay for just a blank key which you can get cut that will open the car and boot if you lock your main Key inside

www.ebay.com RS0&_nkw=BMW+Key&_sacat=0

The next option is get a Blank Key with a Transponder and get cut then paired to your car(varies according to make and model)

The most expensive option is go to BMW and get a spare

Pays to when buying a vehicle to get 2 operating keys

1439928 2017-09-28 17:47:00 We bought a new Toyota Hi Ace for our school last year. I had to get 3 extra keys for it. We go to our local locksmith and he cuts blanks (no door opener facility) and then matches the to the van. He is in the Mall by the library Greg. Probably worth a visit?

Have you tried a locksmith, their can usually do one for half the price of a dealer. Oh and R2 is correct, so pull your head in plod (107)

Ah, Plod is living up to his username! And of course Plonk I've contacted locksmiths. I'm not trying to buy a dealer - I've already bought the car! Its just a spare key I'm after. *sigh* The issues we have to deal with some people in this world can be staggering! :groan:
