1439504 2017-09-21 09:26:00 Hope someone can help out on this one, as I am caught out with Clear shutdown.

Dr Google maybe able to help with the pop/imap settings for GMail, that's what's stopping Outlook to go forward.

lurking.

1439505 2017-09-21 09:43:00 sure .. but why is there no problem or manual input required on tbird ? cowboy stu (7021)
1439506 2017-09-21 14:27:00 This was on geekzone

but if you want to use Gmail and your email client is Outlook then you may have to change the "Allowing less secure apps to access your account" setting in your Gmail, Accounts settings otherwise it will not connect from Outlook (It fails and kind of makes you think its an incorrect password)

Allowing less secure apps to access your account

Google may block sign-in attempts from some apps or devices that do not use modern security standards. Since these apps and devices are easier to break into, blocking them helps keep your account safe.

Some examples of apps that do not support the latest security standards include:

•The Mail app on your iPhone or iPad with version 6 or below
•The Mail app on your Windows phone preceding the 8.1 release
•Some Desktop mail clients like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird

1439508 2017-09-21 20:53:00 if that doesn't work simply use Thunderbird.

I know with Windows live mail 2012 and outlook.com it no longer works, as WLM is simply to old and no longer works with the newer sync. Even had the same problem a few times when using POP. Changed the settings in outlook.com to accept pop, but still wouldn't work.

I use thunderbird, give it the office 2003 theme instead of the boring default, and give the option to select which :) Also install the import function and it brings in all the mail from WLM.

1439509 2017-09-21 21:10:00 yep I use the same but getting older people to change from something familiar can result in many phone calls of the sort you are no doubt receive.
That will be my preferred scenario but not holding my breath.

1439510 2017-09-21 23:12:00 I have recently setup our gmail accounts to open in Windows Live Mail as SWMBO is familiar with it.
Had to allow access to less secure apps as mentioned in post #4.
Once it was working I dissabled the less secure apps & it still seems to work ok.

1439511 2017-09-22 00:07:00 or instead of gmail, setup the new free email on Outlook.com
Connect via pop3/smtp

1439512 2017-09-22 03:22:00 As has been said, just enable access for less secure apps.

You can also go into Gmail settings/labels and untick starred, important and all mail. That will speed syncing up significantly.

WLM is dead - not available or supported anymore, and is very buggy, moving to Thunderbird is the best option for a decent free mail client.

This (freeshell.de)addin allows you to bring all your mail data into TB, and you can export the WLM contacts to a .csv and import those into TB, just watch the mapping is correct when you import.
