630454 2008-01-15 09:15:00 I'm heading to the USA for six months in May and need to get a holiday visa. To do this I need to call their 0900 number (0900 87847 or 0900 878 472 depending on where you look - I'm guessing the 2 on the end is only to make it 0900 US VISA and isn't essential).

This number doesn't work on any landline I've tried (Telecom, Xnet) - it gives the disconnected tone.

I rang their normal Auckland number, and an automated message told me to call the 0900 number for visa enquiries, and said that if I had any problems, call Telecom. I called Telecom and they said that it's not one of their numbers, and the lady I spoke to couldn't call it either.

I tried to get through on the normal number but every extension or option just goes to voicemails, and they don't call back. I've left two now, the first several months ago. I have been trying to get through to them since late last year.

I've been calling during business hours, when their phone is (according to their website) attended.

Any suggestions?

630455 2008-01-15 09:38:00 Send them an email. I found this much quicker when dealing with the british
embassy.

630458 2008-01-15 10:44:00 I'll send my friend a email and ask him. His dad used to be the head of immigration in the Auckland branch. Just not sure where they all are right now  beeswax34 (63)
630459 2008-01-15 10:47:00 Also, try this number:

Phone +64 9 303 2724 ext: 2842/2848/2856. Please be prepared to leave a message on voice mail and we shall respond between the hours of 7.30am and 4pm Monday to Friday.

This is for passport inquiries for US Citizens but atleast they might be able to give you a number for visa's that does work and is answered. This is from the US State dept's website.

630461 2008-01-15 17:53:00 Since you're in Wellington, why don't you just physically go down to the US Embassy, and make your enquiries there? Sure you'll have to go through endless layers of security, but at least you'll get your questions answered. somebody (208)
630462 2008-01-15 21:02:00 The one in Wellington has nothing to do with visas unfortunately . I think this is a different thing, the Consulate or something .

I had an e-mail reply back:

Good morning George,

Thank you for your email .

The Visa Information service phone number is not currently experiencing any problems . Unfortunately the call centre is inbound only, and so is unable to assist via email or phone .

The number to call is 0900 878 472 (0900 US VISA) . The contact centre is open between 7:30am – 5:30pm, Monday to Friday . You will need to get back to your telecommunications provider as you may not have a toll bar it is still possible to have a separate 0900 toll bar . If this is the case please try ringing from another phone .

I don't have an 0900 bar, I can call other 0900 numbers, and even Telecom themselves can't call this number .
