629640 2008-01-12 04:50:00 I was looking at some LCD tv's and there was one that said it has 2x HDMI but nothing about HD.

Does this mean this LCD tv is fully HD capable?

Or does a tv has to specifically say it's High definition?

Can a tv have HDMI and NOT be high def capable?

629641 2008-01-12 21:27:00 It depends. To be fully HD capable the screen must be 1920 x 1080 and be capable if displaying a progressive picture. Many screens advertised as HD have a lower resolution, but may be capable of lowering the resolution of 1080i/p so it is able to be displayed. However, you no longer have a full 1080 HD image (rather a 720p image, but on a TV smaller than 40-inches, you probably won't notice the difference). maccrazy (6741)
629642 2008-01-13 00:48:00 Watch out for some of the elcheapos out there that have HDMI but only a 480P panel. a Panel with 720P is the entry level for HD TV and that's what NZ networks will be showing HD in.. paulw (1826)
629643 2008-01-13 11:47:00 I would look for these things:

full HD 1080P
HDCP
3 x HDMI (version 1.3 - important must have!!!)
= 1 for dvd
= 1 for stereo surround sound/hometheater
= 1 for freeview digital/sky digital/xbox 360/Playstation 3/videocamera etc
coaxel plug
optical plug
components
RCA's/RGB's

Also find out how many bits the panel is,the more bits the better the screen panel.

And also the lcd contrast ratio as well.

And the response time as well in milliseconds, quicker the better.

Do you want?
Teletext
usb port-for digital cameras
picture in picture
pc input-so you can watch your movies from your computer on the tv
tilt and swivel base
and other features

First thing find out how many things you are going to plug into the new tv and what you may want to plug into it in the future and check the back of the tv's inputs that you are looking at in the shops to make sure they have enough inputs and outputs as well for you, outputs is important as well so dont forget those.
Inputs for picture to dvd/vcr/etc
Outputs for sound to stereo

Once you have found the tv's in the shops that meet what you want, wright down there names and model numbers then go on the internet and do Google searches on the tv's you like for reviews/commentary on them as most people in the shops only know what is on the display sticker and written on the box's!!!
Remember the more $$$ you spend on the tv the bigger commision they make so ignore pushy salesman and say "Oh just looking thanks" or "I just want to find out somthing, is blah blah good/to have etc"

Once you have done your internet research then ring up the shops and see which is the cheapest/do cash discounts/deliver/do they install it for you as well if you want.

WARRENTY - GET EXTENDED to many sad stories around about warrentys just expired and somthing happens afterwards.

But like I said at the start its what I would look for and may not be for eveyone.:2cents:

Pioneer,Samsung,Sony,Panasonic, would be the only brands I would look at as being good tv's to check out.:2cents:
