629414 2008-01-11 07:08:00 Even though you a huge specs etc, do you have to partition?

Or can you just have one big huge massive drive?

Whats the differance perfomance wise or other?

629415 2008-01-11 07:20:00 Performance - bugger all, these days. Data safety, advisable. johcar (6283)
629416 2008-01-11 07:31:00 Well the disadvantage is, if you format it will format everything.

Including updates that you download

One advantage, is if you partition a hdd, you wont have to re-download the updates all over again. If you put them on a separate partition.

You can format the main partition, then you can reinstall the updates from the other partition/s

629417 2008-01-11 07:46:00 hmm, I just bought a pc for the lady of the house, its very similar to my one. The only thing is it will definitely have to be reformatted (the owner deleted reg files and everything!) which is cool, I have a new xp disk etc. Ive never done a partition before, in its current state it hasnt either, just a c drive. But as the PC will probably be used for study more then anything i was thinking of leaving it as one. rob_on_guitar (4196)
629418 2008-01-11 07:53:00 You can partition during the XP install.

If theres only one partition at the mo, just create another partition (If youre going to format).

Then format C (dont delete C and recreate it). I did that end of last year.

Nothing ran lol.

I had to reinstall XP again, and format C then reinstall XP on it.

The only thing you have to do (if you format, and have something like an internal or external card reader).

Unplug it, before you format. Since XP's install counts these as disks, and will make them C.

Altho, if its something like a Dell (or something thats got a hidden partition to restore it), this maybe a bit harder.

I suppose something like Partiton Magic will do it as well.

400Gb SATA 7200RPM High performance Hard Drive
Intergrated LAN-USB
Nvidia 8600GT 256MB Video card DX10
Icute ATX case with big front intake fan 500watt P/S
8 in 1 Card reader
LG 18X Dual Channel DVD Writer SATA

Windows Xp

Thats the info Ive got so far. Ill format it tomorrow after work and see what happens.

So just unplug the card reader before formatting? Sounds sweet n easy

629420 2008-01-11 08:17:00 Yup remember to unplug the card reader BEFORE you format.

Plug it back in after XP has been installed. If its internal, just remember WHAT wires go where.

Thats if its not in one block (some internal readers have separate wires).

Or else XP will probably end up on F or G.

Depending on how many slots that card reader has.

Hmm ok doesnt sound like a Dell / HP system ?

You get it built by a shop??

Just follow the prompts in XP's setup screen, its pretty straightforward.

When u go to partition, you can type in the GB's you want in the partition.

Will XP run on that card, even tho its DX10 compatible?? Since XP doesnt support DX10?

629422 2008-01-11 08:45:00 Don't make your operating system partition smaller than 15gig for XP. zqwerty (97)
