784734 2009-06-22 10:45:00 Hi Team

I have an odd email problem. I have reinstalled the OS on my faulty computer and all seems to be going well now, but I now have an email issue.

I have my main computer and a Toshiba Portege running on the lan and both are accessing the net quite normally via a Dlink modem & switch but neither can send emails.

There is a ZA firewall on the Portege but none on the main Box because I haven't reinstalled it yet. The odd email seems to go if left long enough but mostly they don't. All the smtp and pop3 data is correct so i'm baffled as to what the problem is.

Any ideas?

Cheers

784735 2009-06-22 10:49:00 Are you with xtra?

Had a client today with similar issues, going to visit them tomorrow as I could not sort it over the phone.

784736 2009-06-22 11:22:00 One account is Xtra, the other is Orcon.

Hope I haven't sweated for that many hours over a network problem. :horrified

Postscript: Two just went to a Gmail account with only a 2-3 minute delay in the outbox.

Do you have your smtp server set to their smtp server setting?

My main account is with Xtra, and I use pop3/smtp.xtra.co.nz etc but I have a separate service with Orcon for my domain name. They only charge about $5 per month, so all traffic must be on Xtra, however I have always has to use smtp/pop3.orcon.net.nz for their service and they host my business mail on their server. Prior to this I had private hosting and I needed to address that company's server for my business email too.

It all seems very strange. I'm off to sleep on it!

784740 2009-06-22 22:42:00 Well, the problem continues this morning.

I can send email to a Gmail account, and I can receive email normally, but I can't send via Xtra or orcon

This is getting to be a big issue as I have pressing business to do today.

I'm going to see if my old Gmail account is still active and if so I'll use that, but it is very odd that two separate computers could throw up the identical problem unless I made a critical mistake on both of them. I will review the settings again, but any and all suggestions would be much appreciated.

It seems to be a sending problem only, and confined to Xtra, and Orcon.

Risky as it may be, I'm operating without a firewall at present too.

Cheers

OK, I can ping the orcon servers, both in and out, and the pop3 for Xtra, but not the smtp. Does this mean anything?? pop3 port is 110 and smtp is 25, same for both ISPs.

784741 2009-06-22 22:48:00 You will be fine without a firewall for a day or two. Most people don't use any third party firewall, me included.

So at the moment, you have:

Xtra:

pop3 server: pop3.xtra.co.nz
smtp server: smtp.xtra.co.nz - no SSL or authentication

Orcon:

pop3 server: mail.orcon.net.nz (possibly pop3.orcon.net.nz if you have a domain with them, not sure on this.)
smtp server: smtp.xtra.co.nz - no SSL or authentication

Is that right?

I think it should be send.xtra.co.nz and not smtp.xtra.co.nz. From xtras page (telecom.custhelp.com)

Both work - send.xtra.co.nz with SSL port 465 and authentication on the outgoing server, or smtp.xtra.co.nz with no SSL or authentication. :)

If one doesn't work, try the other.
