630910 2008-01-17 08:56:00 I think we should bite the bullet now and start expanding the prisons we have and building new ones.....My thinking is if you have got a crim in prison he isnt causing anymore crime
Expanding prisons and building new ones? Complete with basketball courts and LCD TVs, Xboxs and PS2 consoles, ALL AT THE TAXPAYERS' COST???

Your thinking is rather flawed I'm sorry to say. Sure, a criminal will be no threat as long as he's in prison. But with the NZ system as it is, that criminal won't have long in prison and when he gets out he'll be free to do more crime. Rehabilitation? Bull****. The NZ rehabilitation system is like teaching dogs to stop eating.

630911 2008-01-17 09:21:00 And I notice that the Parole Board are currently using "threat to the community" as the deciding point whether to release someone.

Whatever happened to serving their time as a PUNISHMENT??

630912 2008-01-17 09:35:00 As I have said, build a few prisons in the Southern Alps.

No heating - bring as many blanket as as you want.

No videos, no tvs, one Mary Poppins or Bambi movie a week.

Plenty of books, and PC's (not networked and not on internet). So they can learn and try to improve themselves.

You don't get out till you have a trade and a job lined up. and until you can recite poetry, dance - ball room style and read out loud from any book given to you in clear erudite English.

A hook hanging from the ceiling - just in case they want to use it.

Hard labour 8 hours a day.

Play documentaries of the guys doing it (hide their sorry arse faces) on every tv channel once a week at the same time including C4 etc.

And I tell you what - you won't need to sentence many of them, as NO ONE wants to do hard labour.

PS - I volunteer to run the first one of these jails.

That chap Minto comes to mind, why doesn't he go to Africa and see how well his pals are running the show.

No - it's not going to happen in a world where the media gets to define what is in the public interest and where the media's idea of journalism is pictures first - outrage 2nd - facts a distant third.

630914 2008-01-17 10:05:00 What about 3 strikes and you are out.
Could it be assumed that a crook who has done 3 crimes is beyond help and needs locking up for a good period of time.
Then again all this talk about getting tough with crims is like pissing in the wind its going no whwere
The only way is to vote into a government some serious red necked, non pc, ass kicking people into positions of power like that McVicar dude.

If we have to lock up a lot of people so be it. USA has it sorted they have a prison population of over a million.

well you can foot the bill of imprisoning over 1 in every 300 persons then

i might add that the US 3 strikes rule often results in police shootouts where the suspect on their 3rd strike has nothing to lose by running

likewise in NZ a driver on 90 demerit points really has little incentive to pull over:(

i have a much better solution

what i propose solves overpopulation, the upbringing of more of these retards, and is a serious disincentive to violent crime and theft.

my proposal?

castration.

actually found to prevent sexual offenders from reoffending (obviously), and if it doesn't slow crime today, it will in 30 years time

plus we must remember that it is not the punishment that prevents a crime, but the certainity of being caught.

so more police, more police dogs, and more police tasers, and only one warning before they get used. if you don't like it then don't argue with the officer as he won't be liable provided he's given the one clear warning. pure and simple.

you're welcome to run, but you will be found and brought painfully before a judge. don't run and you might stand a chance in court.

and i do hope, chicken, that if you carry a loaded gun you shoot yourself in the foot before you need to actually use it and find that the assailant has taken it from you or fights fire with fire and uses his own. maybe if you had a large dog you'd be better off; those cowards wouldn't dare touch you.

infact i can vouch for the fact that a loud dog is more effective at deterring thiefs than both security alarms and people actually being home. last time my family got robbed was a decade ago in the year between having our dog hit by a car and growing the new one to a reasonable size - our neighbours all have annual raids on their homes, and one even has installed security cameras after they got robbed 3 times in as many months

630916 2008-01-17 17:19:00 Motorbyclist !

You are wrong !

The thought of being caught DOES NOT deter people from doing anything.
Look at all the people you see in court for 10 or 20 driving or burglary offences !

I feel sorry for the police, they catch most of these scum bags and the judges treat them leniently so they laugh at our "justice system"

I do not mind paying for more jails as long as the scenes are served in full and in tough conditions. That will deter people.

I DO mind paying the amount we are paying per crim per year now, but that is because our "corrections" service does not know how to build and run
jails.

But I do agree with your policy of castration for proven sex offenders.

And not only are do gooders do gooders, they are also know-it-alls.

....until they get ripped off, raped or beaten etc then they become the norm.

630919 2008-01-17 17:45:00 You are mistaking castration of offenders for the real treatment. Back dated castration of the offenders parents. Back-dated. :waughh: It isn't easy, but I am quite sure that some expensive committees can ponder the matter at length.
And, while we are on the matter of expense, let us severely punish those who profit from crime. The savings on police, lawyers, judges etc. will probably allow us to reduce taxes around election time.
