630901 2008-01-17 01:37:00 Yeah the sentancing is absolute crap in this country.

I was talking to my friend yesterday about that thing in CHCH last year where that fellow thought he'd drive his car through a group of people at a party, then through another group at 80kms killing some people.
My mate has to give another report for the case because he was actually one of the only people there who saw it and was sober.
One of the girls who later died, my friend was trying to help - she had two broken legs and massive internal bleeding, he asked her to sqeeze his finger if she could hear him, and she just did.
At that stage the riot police come marching in force around the corner - totaly oblivious to what had just happened and not realised the dozens of people lying on the road covered in blood with broken limbs.
Tim ran up to the cops saying that they need help, in panic and all he got was "GET AWAY!" as the marched along.
They even tried picking that girl up my her arm because they thought all the people spread on the road were just drunk and coma'd out - thats when they realised perhaps to listen to the people screaming and yelling what happened and noticed the compound fracture on this girls leg as well as litres of blood from her mouth running into the gutter.

How long do you think he'd get? I'd like to see him tortured for 12 hours a day for the rest of his life, but I guess not.

My friend was 2 metres away from being hit and saw the whole thing, experienced the lot.
The guy who did that hit a first group of people, decided to aim for the second group on the other side of the road and accelerate up to 80ks to do so.
How many people will be scarred for life from that night? Possibly around 300+ as the party consisted of over 500 at that stage.

How long will that ONE man serve in prison for doing that? It will be interesting to see huh?

He will be out of jail before 8 years.

630902 2008-01-17 01:45:00 The civilian gaols are just too soft, along with the sentences.
In 22 years in the Armed Forces I never new of any former inmate of a Military Glasshouse who would want to get a second term.
I sent one cocky little bastard down for 6 weeks for stealing from his comrades in barracks.
When he returned to Unit he was a stone and a half lighter and very subdued - never appeared to be cocky again.
Now that is punishment. It modified his attitude permanently.

My point exactly, I'm sure it didnt really go through his head at the time, but you know in NZ if you kill someone it isnt as bad as anywhere else. I know they probably dont want to load the prisons, but they should make prison as Ken just said and for longer terms.
And stop sending so many people to jail for minor charges such as driving offences (I mean demerits ect), minor drug charges, smacking your children ect.

It's the way people are handled here which provokes most of the violence IMO, you know its not going to be all that bad if you do something stupid.
Then theres the people who stay in jail to escape from society too.

Why cant the government listen!?

630904 2008-01-17 02:07:00 I'll tell you something else. The media needs to stop making stars of the crims:

www.nzherald.co.nz

Rather than shaming them, media exposure feeds their deluded sense of self worth. I don't believe the argument about the public's right to know when publishing full gory details, pics of the suspect in court, video of them in the court room etc.

I don't think crims should get publicity out of their crimes. Their faces, their gestures to camera, their dumb-ass opinions and comments should not be reported in the manner they are.

yeh and so it should have.........unfortunately jails here are NOT designed to punish they're designed to 'rehabilitate' which mostly they fail miserably at

Thats just it mate, nail on the head. Jail is no longer about punishment and retribution, its about helping to "rehabilitate" these poor souls who society has disregarded or their parents have maltreated.

Trouble is jail is no longer a deterrent or stigma it once was, now employers must employ with equal blah blah blah........Political Correctness has yet to prove itself anything other than a bane on our society, unfortunately joe average New Zealander has failed to make their voice heard above that of the minority green liberals, so we are stuck with watch we have.

I say bring back flogging in the market square. Make the crimes feels our outrage on their backs as we cleansens their evil ways which each lash.....

Which of course is not going to happen in a do gooder ruled world.
That chap Minto comes to mind, why doesn't he go to Africa and see how well his pals are running the show.

630908 2008-01-17 06:00:00 It only news worthy because it happened in the white bastion of North Shore.
If it happened in South Auckland it would have just been another bashing.
I know the truth is hard to face for some people but walking alone especialy at night in South Auckland is saying bash me please.
For chicks to walk around late at night in groups smaller than four is stupidity.
I would walk around Otara late at night but only if I was carrying a gun like an Uzi/Steyr with some spare mags taped to the main mag. Although 9mm bullet not generally big enough to kill large/fat people it should knock them down so you can keep moving.

Violent @ssholes like you ruined NZ. You know the perpetrators, by chance?

630909 2008-01-17 08:40:00 I think we should bite the bullet now and start expanding the prisons we have and building new ones.
To get a reduction from a court ordered sentence you would have to convince everyone, prison staff, your victim, even the tea lady you wouldnt reoffend. Three convictions and you are going away for a least 10 years.
My thinking is if you have got a crim in prison he isnt causing anymore crime.
If we have to lock up a lot of people so be it. USA has it sorted they have a prison population of over a million.
