DSL-504G

Test send is still sitting in the outbox after an hour & 15

There's got to be a simple solution to this, it all started fron the crash and after the reinstall of W2K & set up, email was faulty. Simultaneously the laptop supposedly developed the same problem.

I'm kinda thinking there's a cause and effect problem here somewhere, like the router-desktop combination changed something in the router settings? That could account for the laptop not working either. I was a bit thick and didn't disconnect it while reloading the OS.

The router has been rebooted several times, as have the computers. I'm not supposed to load something into the computer like drivers for the router am I? I don't recall having to do anything like that to get the laptop connected.

I'd still like to hear from somebody re the subnet mask variation, whether I should change it, and if so how and to what?

And is it safe to let the TCP IP optimiser make changes to the computer?

Cheers

784765 2009-06-25 09:45:00 The stalled email in my out box was just delivered after 2hrs 45min on hold. It appears to have happened when I activated Mailwasher to check for incoming, and when I downloaded the single item showing, which was incoming from another person, the stalled mail came too.

784766 2009-06-25 09:59:00 could it be that mailwasher stops messages being sent until its scheduled to check for incoming mail? plod (107)

Sadly, no. I have checked all permutations to make sure there was no interaction.

I really want to hear comment on the apparent subnet mask change in the router because that could be the problem, at least it is the only solid issue I have found that could affect both computers.

That's enough for me for the day, Billy has left the building................

784768 2009-06-26 09:20:00 Well, I took a closer look at this network mask thing in the set up for the router and I see that it is called a 'Lan Network Mask' whereas my record of settings lists a 'Subnet Mask' .

I changed the router to 255 . 255 . 255 . 0 per my original installation notes, but it fired back a warning that:

"You may not be able to access the HTTP interface after you submit . In such cases verify if a route exists to your HTTP interface"

At that point I bailed out again because the last thing I want is to lose my incoming email and internet connectivity .

I distinctly remember entering subnet mask data in my network when I set it up way back when, and the setting is recorded in my 'important data' log, but I can't find that setting anywhere in the TC/IP setup or anything to do with my network so I'm not sure where that hides either???

Any ideas as to where to look?

Stop Press:

I have just found that if there is a message waiting in the outbox and I download an incoming message, the waiting message is sent immediately after the incoming finishes . That is the one most positive thing I have managed to identify, but I have no idea what it means or why it happens . . . . .

Cheers

Especially the first item
www.freeemailtutorials.com

Now that you have found out that you can actually send mail even though not when you actually want to it shows that all setting are basically correct.

I suspect if you put the tick in the box on the link I sent all will be well.

784770 2009-06-26 10:06:00 I get a 'server ready" response from smtp.xtra.co.nz 25 but no response at all from smtp.orcon.net.nz 25

I get responses on pop3 for both Xtra and Orcon from port 110

I hope this is beginning to narrow things down, it is the most positive outcome I have had so far.

Still haven't had time to locate the manual for the router to check the MTU.

Work is very pressing and I'm doing very long hours (6:00am to midnight) every day.

Cheers

Ok, getting a response is good but not sure why you would get nothing from the Orcon server.

*I should have also asked if you can send mail via telnet before :yuck: as per www.yuki-onna.co.uk -these commands can vary a little so let us know if you run into problems.

If the above does not work then remove mailwasher, test. If still no luck remove/reinstall Outlook and test again!

Good luck!

You beauty Safari!! I now have 50% of my problem resolved . I actually use Outlook 2000 but the config options are no doubt the same as 2003, just a less fancy interface .

I can now sent normally via my Xtra account, but the fix made no difference to the Orcon account . That didn't surprise me much because that's the one that is not responding to pings or telnet for SMTP .

Now, what could be the options for Orcon? Tomorrow I will delete that account and re-enter it to see if that helps but I rather doubt that it will because I just checked the laptop and that came right for Xtra too, but it still won't send to Orcon either .

I still can't imagine how it could be affected like that because it was tucked up asleep in a cupboard when all this drama started and none of its settings have been changed, so the big finger points to Orcon!

784772 2009-06-26 21:55:00 It is nothing to do with Orcon, you are using Xtra smtp to send mail.

I think your Orcon sending problems is to do with Xtra not allowing sending through their SMTP server with a domain name as the From address unless you authenticate this with one of their procedures.
In other words you are trying to send through smtp.xtra.co.nz using an email address in the From Field such as a domain name that is not something @xtra.co.nz

When they first started this new procedure when they went to yahoo it caused all sorts of problems for people with domain names.
Have a read of this
www.nzconnection.net(@xtra)_settings

Different settings seem to work for different people so have a play with different ones.
Don't touch the incoming settings, it is only the outgoing that needs to be adjusted.

784773 2009-06-26 22:28:00 xtra's smtp server won't be blocking pinging of smtp.orcon.co.nz though.

Billy don't worry about the netmask, you're obviously recieving a valid IP address from the correct subnet so its not an issue.
