630723 2008-01-16 19:20:00 Sounds like he had spy ware or something.

What you said happens when you try and install SP2 on XP, when the system is full of spyware.

Or SP1 wasn't installed and he had something like Sasser.
Robb had installed all S. PACKS,would it have stopped repeating if opened in safe mode?

630724 2008-01-16 19:25:00 Robb had installed all S. PACKS,would it have stopped repeating if opened in safe mode? Read my post #10 - it may have stopped restarting, but then how long to repair - my charge out rate is $80.00 +gst / hr on a customers PC yesterday it took 1 hour of solid work to clean the system from spyware / viruses and then a further 1 hour (approx) to do a repair install of the OS - and prob another 30 - 45 minutes today to update software and replace programs - how do you think I should Charge that ???

Edited: for to mention the 2 hours I had to wait that it took to copy the drive using Acronis on to another HD , so if it all turned to custard at least I had a back up of the original .

PS: this PC is a work PC thats URGENT, wouldn't boot past post,as soon as it tried to start it would crash /reboot - If its not back today no one gets paid in the company, its the accounts PC - I collected the PC around 2 pm yesterday (talk about no pressure)

It may have been something in startup that was causing it. It probably would stop in safe mode.

Since nothing loads in safe mode. Besides whats needed to get into safe mode.

It may have been easier to find the prob in safe mode. If it was a software prob.

Thanks Speed,I will attempt to remember that. Nothing wrong with helping to fix friend s Computers - good on ya! But like here really - just think the hours taken sometimes to help someone get their PC sorted - maybe we should put a little timer and say - look how much you saved :D ;)

630729 2008-01-16 21:02:00 Average charge rate for lots of places is $80.00 per hour

Guess that makes me way below average.
And I always detail whats been done on my invoices.

As for the restarting, ALWAYS make sure Automatically Restart is unticked in Control Panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, Settings.

That way you get to see whatever STOP error its trying to give.

Quite likely just a software problem though.
