784903 2009-06-23 06:12:00 IMO if you're not overclocking at all Jack then getting an Extreme is a huge waste of money. The performance of a $2300 Core i7 Extreme at 3.33GHz is no different to the performance of a $550 Core i7 920 overclocked to 3.33GHz, which in itself is quite an easy feat.

Of course, when overclocking an i7 an aftermarket cooler is in order, but a good one like the Noctua NH-U12P or True120 will only set you back a further $130. In all, you'd save over $1500! With that $1500 you could get anything else that you want to spend money on that is worth up to $1500.

I fully agree with QAZ here, from benchmark results it shows no difference really.

Mobo is a great choice.

RAM-I would personally go for Corsair, OCZ or Gskill. Not sure about reaper, but I've always stuck with those 3 brands.

Reaper is a very, very sexy line of RAMs made by OCZ. Have a look:

Guess I'm not up to date eh?

In that case, stick with the Reapers. And those sexy RAM heatsinks....:waughh:

784906 2009-06-23 09:00:00 Well you know what they say about old fools!, I appreciate you have none to leave your money with, however I cant understand how you can throw over $2K on a cpu when the $550 version will do just the same with a gentle clock?....Do you realise that with the difference between your i7 extreme and the 920 cheaper version, you could in fact buy and Intel SSD E version 32G drive and a another SSD-MLC version 128Gb SSD drive for your FX game and together they would give the extreme version a hiding!

Disk access while loading levels would be sweet, and if the SSD are not up your street, $1500 would allow you to put together a wicked 4-5 spindle RAID array...CPU power isnt everything when the slowest part of your system is storage access lag!

Just my opinion Jack, if you have some money to splash, we could set you up a bit better than just the flagship Intel CPU mate!
