2009-06-22 23:15:00 | OK, I can send messages to both Xtra and Orcon accounts via Gmail and passing through mailwasher on the way so my incoming route is working. Next I'll try sending messages from these two to my Gmail account and see what happens. Watch this space. Cheers Billy 8-{) First impressions are that I can't send from Gmail to either account but I think I'd better slow down and do it again more carefully! >>Later> Yes, I'd better try that again because two messages just turned up in Gmail and I think I may have temporarily lost the plot.

2009-06-23 10:57:00 | Well, I can download mail no problem, and I send mail to Gmail addresses with reasonable success, but there is no way I can send mail via either my orcon or Xtra addresses . I can understand why Gmail is OK as it is webmail, but clearly I am missing something here in my settings for smtp & pop3, or something else important . It seems to me that the origin should logically be here because all was well until my computer crashed . I have compared my laptop settings and they are identical and now I find that it is giving the same problem for both email addresses, which points to my adsl modem or something similar, but the modem seems ok because it works for websites and lets me ping orcon as well . . I'm getting an orcon error message of 'Error number: 0x800ccc0e' for both computers . Any suggestions?? Cheers Billy 8-{)

I also use Gmail and mail sent there is forwarded to my Xtra account. I used to have an Orcon account but I currently do not use it. I can still access Orcon to check on WebMail. Not sure if this helps you. |

2009-06-23 12:18:00 | Well, I've spent an hour or more googling the error code with absolutely no result, the closest I have found has been a few US results suggesting port 587 as an alternative to 25 . Most yanks seem to use Outlook Express and their forums are really unhelpful as well . Current position: I can ping successfully the following: smtp & pop3 . orcon . net . nz which also returns me their IP addresses . I can't ping smtp . xtra . co . nz 'request timed out" but I get the IP address returned so I guess they block pings . I can ping pop3 . xtra . co . nz and it replies with the IP address, but it calls itself pop1 . tnz . mail . vip . aue . yahoo . com I can ping incoming . orcon . net . nz which returns a different IP Likewise pinging outgoing . orcon . net . nz The same for Xtra times out but returns incoming as 'unknown host' and no ip . Outgoing times out too, returning IP as as 202 . 27 . 184 . 100 All of this seems to tell me that I have the connectivity but that there is a protocol error of some sort happening . The only other change that I have made (and just remembered) is that I downloaded the latest version of Avast to both computers, the desktop because the old one was gone, and the laptop because it didn't have any AV installed because it doesn't usually go on line . How do I turn off Avast to see if it is the problem? I can't see anything that will let me do that and I don't want to uninstall it . I give up for now, I'm off to bed and hopefully there may be some inspirational posts by the time I get started tomorrow morning . Thanks to all for the help so far . Might have to dig out my steam-powered dial up modem for email purposes if this doesn't improve soon . Cheers Billy 8-{) :waughh:

2009-06-23 12:24:00 | My client already had a new modem from Telecom waiting for me when I arrived. This was not the issue, I had to remove dust from the ethernet port with compressed air, I noticed the conection was not very stable, the computer was a few years old and caked with dust on the inside. With a good blow out, the conection to the modem was good. This would be the first time I have ever had dust causing a connection problem. Virus protection: NOD32 They are with xtra with their own domain name, settings: POP: mail.theirdomain.co.nz SMTP: smtp.xtra.co.nz With all the defaults you get when setting up a new mail account. hth :)

2009-06-23 14:51:00 | Have you tried a different e-mail client like Outlook Express to see if you can send thru your Xtra / Orcon e-mail address?? (Just to see if it is outlook or your computer) Have you removed your Orcon & Xtra e-mail accounts & reset them up?? Just to confirm Billy, you can download mail from your Xtra / Orcon e-mail address OK? And via gmail you can send e-mails to your Xtra / Orcon e-mail address correct? & you get those e-mail from gmail OK??

2009-06-23 19:28:00 | I doubt if it is Avast causing the problem but you could try this Right click the Avast icon in your Systray and select "Stop On-Access Protection". Before you try to send any new messages delete any unsent from your Outbox as a corrupted message there will prevent any new ones being sent. I think you are right it is looking like a modem issue Try connecting one computer direct to the D-link and bypass the switch In the D-Link configuration set the MTU and MRU to 1492 These settings especially with D-Link modems are known to cause this type of problem and usually you will notice some websites will not load either.

2009-06-24 00:17:00 | Before you try to send any new messages delete any unsent from your Outbox as a corrupted message there will prevent any new ones being sent. I have been deleting all unsent messages to ensure a level playing field. I can send messages to both my accounts via gmail and they are delivered to orcon & xtra servers as checked with mailwasher and they download into Outlook OK as well. It seems that everything is quite normal apart from the inability to send via Xtra or Orcon, yet pinging suggests that I am in communication with them ok. I am utterly confuzzled by the whole schemozzle. There is no particular reason to believe that the DLink modem was affected by the crash of '09, it is on the other side of a DLink switch as well. All web usage is normal. My only thought now is that in reinstalling the OS and Outlook I have somehow overlooked some critical setting that has long vanished from my memory. I have to get some urgent work done for a few days but I'll look at the problem in odd moments. In the meantime, any/all suggestions for any tests I can carry out would be helpful. The fact that the laptop is out too seems significant and maybe points to the modem or switch. I'll try a direct connection to the modem using one of the three spare ports and see what happens. I know my switch has one faulty port because it sits there flashing nonstop so I don't use it any more. Cheers Billy 8-{) :badpc:

2009-06-24 00:42:00 | The D-Link may have been ok before but does not mean that the setting I suggested you check is not the cause of the problem. MTU settings can cause problems with mail sending believe me. Or if you don't believe me forums.whirlpool.net.au The MTU setting is under WAN in the modem configuration set it to 1492

MTU settings can cause problems with mail sending believe me. Or if you don't believe me forums.whirlpool.net.au The MTU setting is under WAN in the modem configuration set it to 1492 I certainly don't disbelieve you Safari, the sole reason I have not yet checked that is because I have urgent work to do today and I can't remember where the Modem manual is. That will come to me, or I will find a copy on the net then I'll check it. I am trying to follow all advice but have to earn a living as well so as soon as I had basic connectivity back, and knew I was not missing incoming mail, I went back to work with occasional breaks to try ideas. I remember changing an MTU value many years ago and it had a dramatic effect on my connection speed. Back then it was a quite arcane and very difficult to do for a rank amateur.
