784893 2009-06-23 03:57:00 I have decided on a partial upgrade rather than a new computer and would like an opinion from experienced builders on my choice of replacement parts.

1 x Core i7 Extreme 975 3.33 GHz, Socket 1366, Retail pack with fan $2,298.95

1 x P6T Deluxe V2, Socket 1366, Intel X58 Chipset, 6xDIMM DDR3, 3xPCIe-16, 2xPCI, 14xUSB2, Audio, 1xATA, 7xSATA, RAID, ATX $627.91

2 x Reaper Triple Channel Kit, Heatpipe Cooler, 3x2GB, DDR3-1600, PC3-12800, CL7, DIMM $512.96

The CPU is a definate, but I am prepared to adjust the M/B
and Ram on expert advice.
I have been told the stock heatsink and fan are sufficient. Any comment?

784894 2009-06-23 04:02:00 It's a bit overkill for playing Flight Simulator isn't it? somebody (208)
784895 2009-06-23 04:11:00 You do love spending money on PC components. :p

I'd get Corsair Dominator RAM, something like this (www.computerlounge.co.nz) or this (www.computerlounge.co.nz) if you really are crazy.

CPU and motherboard are excellent.

784896 2009-06-23 04:19:00 The Core i7 does run hotter than Core 2 Quads, but the stock heatsink of the Core i7 Extreme is different from the stock heatsink of the normal Core i7 (which is basically a bigger version of the 65nm LGA775 cooler).

If you're not overclocking then the stock Core i7 Extreme cooler will suit you just fine.

PS: do you love upgrading, or do you just love making me drool? :p

784898 2009-06-23 04:27:00 you should get a LN2 pot with a extreme mobo :) O/C'ers heaven ZapperBoy10647 (11988)
784899 2009-06-23 05:26:00 It may be overkill for FSX , but people keep producing addons that demand more resources and I'rd just love to get in front, once.

And I'm just on 80 with no family anymore and I know I can't take it with me. So I'm going to spend it before I go.

784900 2009-06-23 05:39:00 IMO if you're not overclocking at all Jack then getting an Extreme is a huge waste of money. The performance of a $2300 Core i7 Extreme at 3.33GHz is no different to the performance of a $550 Core i7 920 overclocked to 3.33GHz, which in itself is quite an easy feat.

Of course, when overclocking an i7 an aftermarket cooler is in order, but a good one like the Noctua NH-U12P or True120 will only set you back a further $130. In all, you'd save over $1500! With that $1500 you could get anything else that you want to spend money on that is worth up to $1500.

:drool
It's what I'd get. If I could afford it.

And I don't think it's overkill for FSX - be interesting to see if you can run everything maxed out without it complaining.
FSX is certainly not a budget HW title........
