633145 2008-01-23 05:54:00 I'm looking to buy a new car to replace my 94 Honda Ascot. The Ascot had been my first car, but it's rather uneconomic and I don't need a sedan right now. I prefer hatchbacks, but I'll settle for sedans or bigger if it's more reliable than an Ascot.

I want the car to nearly always pass its WOF. I'm not car-savvy, so be gentle. :p

Oh, and I prefer automatic, but I'll go for a manual if it only comes in manual transmission.

633146 2008-01-23 06:20:00 Do you mean $1,000, as in the header?

or $10,000?

633147 2008-01-23 06:32:00 I mean $1000 or less. qazwsxokmijn (102)
633148 2008-01-23 06:42:00 Man is not capable of miracles... Finding a car under $1000 will be hard depending where you look (car yards will be out as most of them are usually $4000+) Finding a good reliable car under $1000 will be impossible unloess you find some idiot wanting to rip himself off... :2cents:

Corollas are nice, economical and reliable cars.

633149 2008-01-23 06:42:00 Under a $1000?

You pay your money and take your chances.

No one can make a suggestion for a car of that price that will be worth anything more then hot air.

633150 2008-01-23 06:49:00 Well, new limit: $1500. :D qazwsxokmijn (102)
633151 2008-01-23 06:59:00 Have a look at auctions but that I think .. you need $2.5k or up. Nomad (952)
633152 2008-01-23 07:28:00 There is no such thing as a cheap car. If it doesn't cost a bundle up front, it will shortly.

If you are not car-savvy, there is a brand of person specially bred and trained to prey on you. They are always ready for one more sucker.

633153 2008-01-23 07:33:00 As above, get a Corolla. Pctek's has been to the moon and back 25 times  dolby digital (5073)
633154 2008-01-23 08:03:00 I did get a Corona as part payment of a debt once. It rattled like a polar skeleton festival when first started, and blew smoke profusely until it got warm. I would not fill the fuel tank since that would raise the value above the insurance limit, Strangely, an oil change healed it to the point I might even try a half tank of gas. Another early oil and filter change made enough improvement to risk putting a set of plugs in it. At that stage, it was worth flushing the cooling system and trying it's first anti-freeze in many years. Strangely enough, apart from oil changes, a battery or two and a couple of sets of tyres it was maintenance free, and that pile of junk was sold for 5 times what I got it for after 8 years of fairly long distances - a lot of it towing a caravan. At that stage it was just short of 500,000KM.
I suppose the original oil was just a smoky blend, and whatever bits were rattling on start-up wore away and stopped knocking together.
Giving it a cut and polish may have made it quite shiny, but made the colour so much darker it was a bit too warm in the summer. After the exercise it was a dark bronze, before that it was light grey.
The first owner was the sort of person who deserved an Austin. No, he was worse than that, he deserved two of them.
