632962 2008-01-22 23:01:00 Hi guys, I need some job advice. I've got a job, well, almost got a job, stacking shelves, but I need some professional advice. Since it's only going to be for a few months, should I enter into an Individual Employment Agreement, or a Collective Employment Agreement as a member of the National Distributors Union?

If I go union, I have access to union reps and whatnot, but they take union fees from my pay (which, at a whole $9.18 an hour, isn't that good anyway), whereas if I go solo, I get more money, but no union rep. But, since it's only a short-term job, what's the worst that could happen? Basically, is being a member of the NDU worth it? And yes, I am new to this "working" concept. Thanks.

632963 2008-01-22 23:21:00 Tricky one ..
I been on a fixed term contract for 1yr and within 3 months they said they restructure and cos you are on a fixed term contract no redundancy .. but since I was with a union I got a payout .. if it wasn't for the union, I would of got nothing.

Even if your contract says 3 months or what .. they still have the ability to restructure.

Worst can happen is out of job earlier than you thought and no compensation. Being provided minimum notice period in your contract. 1 or 2 or 4 weeks and you are out the door.

632964 2008-01-22 23:49:00 Thanks Nomad, but I don't think there's much of a risk of redundancy via restructuring, as I'll be working for Progressive Enterprises, at a store which is still being built. But there's still that risk. But like you said, "Worst can happen is out of job earlier than you thought and no compensation. Being provided minimum notice period in your contract. 1 or 2 or 4 weeks and you are out the door.". If that happens to me, it's no biggie really. Thanks. ubergeek85 (131)
632965 2008-01-23 00:04:00 I personally wouldn't worry about joining a union for that short period. I would only join a union if it was a long term job and my career. You don't really want a union creaming off a percentage when you are makng not much more than minimium wage. robbyp (2751)
632966 2008-01-23 00:12:00 Actually, for my age, $9.18 is the minimum wage, I think. After tax, that leaves me with squat. ubergeek85 (131)

OTOH it's more than you get on the dole depending on the hours you work.

I would not join a union for the length of time you are contemplating.

In the event you were unjustly dismissed there are other avenues you can pursue.

632968 2008-01-23 00:19:00 For employment for that length of time it's not worth joining a union, more trouble than it's worth. Your chances of getting fired that quickly are slim indeed. wratterus (105)
632969 2008-01-23 00:21:00 Nah, I can only work up to 20 hrs a week, otherwise they kick me off my govt-funded computer course. Damn Beurocracy! And thanks wratterus, it seems the general consensus is that for the length of time I'm working, it's not worth it. Thanks. ubergeek85 (131)
632970 2008-01-23 02:42:00 I'm intrigued by the replies to a query which - in my opinion, anyway - missed out an important piece of information.

(Don't get me wrong.
In general, I believe in belonging to a union. I was even once a union rep myself)

But the question here is whether it's worth it for "a few months."
So if it's simply a commercial decision versus an ideology, there's an element of gambling involved - i.e."Will I need the union's help or not?

To analyse the odds on that, surely one needs to know the cost of union membership? Initial/ongoing/whatever?
And defining " a few months" wouldn't hurt, either...
