632574 2008-01-21 20:17:00 I read that the Royal Family is not making an effort with Sir Ed's Funeral? If this is correct, why should we bother retaining the Union Jack on the New Zealand flag?

I know the flag issue has been ongoing, but it might be a good time to show we don't need the Royal Family?

That Union Jack needs to go!

632577 2008-01-21 20:41:00 I have no intention of going to the queen's funeral, so I won't comment on which ones she goes to.
The flag would be better without that offensive symbol though.

632578 2008-01-21 20:43:00 Leave the flag out of it.

Go to an RSA and talk to some of the guys that fought under it. Maybe youll get a bigger picture or wait a few more generations...

632580 2008-01-21 20:57:00 Well they're not particularly relevant, and they'd probably eclipse sir Eds family. How would you like the queen turning up to your dads funeral? They haven't attended any funerals internationally of anyone other than heads of states. He was highly recognised in his own lifetime, as a member of the highest order of knighthood, so they hardly show that they don't care.

The flag would look nicer without it, but really how much does it matter? Do we want them here? It's a NZ issue, and it's probably better this way. I'm not a royalist, but people have blown this way out of proportion. NZ functions as a republic really, it's just formalities that haven't changed. And I don't know why people are getting so wound up about this. It's taking importance away from the real issue, which is that we've lost an important member of our community.

Exactly.

632582 2008-01-21 21:25:00 Well given the distain that Heir Helen has shown for Britain & Royalty, like wiping the Privy Counsel, abandoning the Queens Honours etc they probably don’t feel welcome. ;) B.M. (505)
632583 2008-01-21 21:52:00 No problems. Helen will be there, she would never miss an opportunity to get her face on TV, regardless of where it is anywhere in the world. Bantu (52)
