632278 2008-01-20 21:51:00 I've using Visio but find its an ugly peice of software to use and want to try something else.

Basically Im making BEV maps and floor plans for singular buildings and a couple of larger 6 - 8 building sites.

Cheers

632280 2008-01-21 01:41:00 Dont actually use this Yet , but I'm downloading a trial - the demo's on the left look OK - 2D and 3D - price isn't to bad either. Possible Software (www.imsidesign.com) as well as many others to select from, engineering etc. wainuitech (129)

632283 2008-01-21 06:20:00 Birds Eye View. Most maps etc are like this, but some Ive been looking at are 3d and some are even layered. I just want normal plain old boring stuff but with enough features to accomodate easy adjustments for future renovations etc. Visio is OK I shouldnt really knock it but its not quite easily used. Maybe I just need to get more familiar with it. rob_on_guitar (4196)
632284 2008-01-21 06:34:00 I rather like Draft Choice by Trius. It is a 2d CAD program with a pretty easy operation, It allows layering, symbols etc and many other standard CAD features.
PM me if you want an evaluation copy.

632285 2008-01-21 09:37:00 Sometime last century I trained as an architectural draughtsperson - in the days of paper and pencil stuff.

A few years ago I was looking for a CAD program and came across http://www.cadstd.com/ There's a free version and a pro version with extra features (and a tutorial).

Looks very basic but has produced some reasonable results.

632287 2008-01-21 20:37:00 Full featured CAD programs have moveable grid lines and all sorts of goodies. A yacht builder friend showed me how changing a space by 200mm made the rest of the boat alter to suit. Then the elevations and cross sections change as well. Don't like it? A click puts it all back again.

CAD std doesn't do that. Shift a line and you manually have to shift everything else. But it works, is a good intro to CAD and does all that I need at this stage.

A few hints:

- Keep an eye on the instructions at bottom left of screen

- The default grid line is, I think, 100mm and lines snap to it. Frustrating if you want to show a 50 or 75mm wall (or a dimensioned wall 12.350 long). Answer is simple. Change the grid line whilst doing the smaller stuff then change it back as needed.

- Page a bit small to see? Zoom in on the bit you want, make the changes then zoom out using mouse wheel.

I seem to remember a certain amount of frustration in the beginning, upgraded to the pro, did the tutorial in a couple of hours and going "Ah, of course. Simple when you know how!"
